Mermaid Tattoos - Not Just for Sailors

Mermaid Tattoos

Mermaid tattoos have been around since the early 1300's. Although the mermaids themselves were initially thought to be the product of hallucinating sailors who had spent too long at sea, they later became synonymous with any mysterious creature who lived in the ocean.

Sailors were thought to wear mermaid tattoos to bring them luck on the open seas in the event they fell overboard and to keep them company on long voyages where women were not permitted. Myths surrounding mermaids however, claim that they are sirens who lure men to their deaths with the sound of their voices or their beauty.

In the archetypical sense, the mermaid embodies everything associated with the sea and the mythological force of rebirth and the natural world. Throughout history, in folklore, fantasy, and mythology, the mermaid has held a place as the handmaiden of Aphrodite and Venus and a symbol of the tragedy of star-crossed romance.

One of the talented artists at Inflicting Ink Tattoo will be happy to help you design your own custom mermaid tattoo...just ask!
