Laser Tattoo Removal–3 Things You Need to Know

There is a great deal of myth surrounding tattoo removal. Too many would have you believe that you can rid yourself of an unwanted tattoo permanently with the use of a simple cream or cover-up, when that is simply not the case unless you would like to use the product day after day, year after year as a means to cover, rather than remove, the tattoo. The expense of these kinds of things can pile up faster than you know, when for a simple one time charge, you can be rid of tattoo regret for life.

Like anything you do involving your body, you need to do a bit of research and consider the facts before you proceed.

Here are a few quick ones to get you moving in the right direction:

1. There is some discomfort depending upon how dark the colors of the tattoo are, how many treatments are required, and your level of pain tolerance; which is very different for all of us.

2. You can remove dark tattoos just as easily as light ones. With the laser technology we have available in our tattoo studio from the Quanta Q Plus C and T laser system, we can remove black, blue, purple, yellow, green and red tattoo pigments safely, easily, and effectively. And, because the Q Plus uses short pulses of highly focused energy, heating up only the ink and breaking it down into particles that the body naturally releases, there is minimal to zero damage to the skin from the process. Laser tattoo removal is the single most effective method of removing unwanted tattoos.

3. You can afford laser tattoo removal treatments. If you can afford to get a tattoo, you can afford to have it removed. Prices are typically comparable to how much it cost to get your tattoo, and payment plans are always available. Keeping in mind that tattoo removal is a process, you can pay for each session as you go. This is recommended anyway as you will need time to heal and release the layers of ink between each treatment prior to moving on for another one.

If you are interested in laser tattoo removal, contact Jeff at Inflicting Ink (401) 683-5680, or by email at info@InflictingInkTattoo.com, for a consultation or more information.

Tattoo Artist Gives Confidence to Breast Cancer Patients

Inflicting Ink is an avid supporter of breast cancer fundraising and research efforts whenever possible. And while we do not do surgical tattoos, we do offer beautiful cosmetic tattoos and laser tattoo removal.

Tattoo artist helps women regain confidence after breast surgery with her artwork

By Kate Elizabeth Queram

After 16 years as a tattoo artist, Sarah Peacock has an extensive portfolio of the art she's immortalized on people's skin.

But some of her most meaningful works aren't found among the pages of portraits in her collection. They can be seen only on the chests of breast cancer survivors.

For about three years, Peacock, co-owner of Artfuel Inc. tattoo parlor in Wilmington, has been tattooing nipples for survivors who have undergone breast-reconstruction surgery.

Sometimes, her customers have had their nipples reconstructed by a plastic surgeon; other times, she's tattooing directly on the breast itself. In both cases, Peacock uses around nine shades of ink to realistically shade and tint the flesh to perfectly mirror what each woman's nipples looked like prior to her mastectomy.

"I tattoo tonally," said Peacock, who works from the "before" photos taken by her customers' plastic surgeons. "I use as many colors as it takes."

Nipple reconstruction is the final step in the breast-rebuilding process, meaning that for Peacock's customers, the trip to the tattoo parlor is the last phase of a long and painful cosmetic process.
But the result, they say, is worth it.

"Before I had the nipples done, it was literally two mounds sitting there and it did not look normal. It did not look real," said Susie Cox-Parker, 47, tattooed by Peacock after her double mastectomy in 2008. "I was like, ‘No, I'm too young, I'm not supposed to look like this, and I want to be as real and normal-looking as possible.'

"It made a big difference to me."

By Kimberly Goldthwait

Are People Still Fired Over Tattoos?

Apparently this Mansfield, Ohio woman says she was.

Mansfield Woman Claims She Was Fired For Tattoo

October 24, 2011
MANSFIELD, Ohio - Abby Carper of Mansfield said she was fired for her body art.

Carper, a home health care worker, said he was terminated because of her tattoos, even though she had them when she was hired.

She has tattoos on her arm, her shoulder, her back and she still plans to get more. They include a fairy, a dragon, and her children's names.

Carper said when she was hired a few months ago by Care Companions of Ohio, her tattoos were not an issue.

"Most elderly men I take care of are veterans and I've seen naked ladies on their arms, bulldogs for Marines, anchors. You name it, I've seen it," said Carper.

Then two weeks ago, the 31-year-old Mansfield mother of five said she was told her body art didn't belong in her line of work.

Carper's mother told ONN's Denise Alex that it should be the quality of the care, not the tattoos, that matters.

ONN-TV tried contacting Care Companions of Ohio, but they not yet responded.

Carper said she plans to filed a complaint with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission alleging discrimination.

Carper is now working as a home health aid at another Mansfield company.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates more than 45 million Americans have at least one tattoo.

by Alex Sampson
September 23, 2011
GEELONG tattoo artist Lucky Diamond Rich has inked his name in the Guinness World Record books for the sixth time running.

For the sixth year in a row, he's been listed in the Guiness World Records book as the most tattooed man in the world, the Geelong Advertiser reports.

He has had his entire body (and he means entire) covered in tattoos, not once, but twice.

Lucky said he has never been inhibited in any way by his physical appearance and was told by his parents as a child to do whatever made him happy.

"I've lived like that since I was a little boy and have had a life beyond my wildest dreams,'' he said.

Tattoos Gaining Acceptance

Among mainstream tattoo lovers, acceptance has always been an issue. Whether you’re an executive, or a mechanic, there has always been at least one location where your body art has not been welcome – typically, at work.

Happily however, those days are coming to an end as more and more people become open-minded about tattoos and those who sport them.

The buzz on body art

September 23, 2011
There are many ways a person can express himself or herself artistically.
Correction: Darl Papple, an artist at Magic Touch worked Wednesday on the "Dungeons and Dragons" tattoo. It was reported earlier that Tim Evitts was the artist.
So, why get a tattoo — a piece of art you can't sell off or return to a retailer?
"Everyone expresses themselves differently," said Tim Evitts, owner and artist at Pinckney's Magic Touch Tattoo. "I say, to each their own. If people like them, that's fine. If people don't, that's fine, too."
Once thought of as art for bikers and thugs, more and more people today are opting for body art. The art form has become much more accepted than in the past, Evitts said.
Mike "Bagz" Bagwell, a six-year ink artist at Howell's Eternal Tattoos and Eternal Ink, said he's seen firsthand the misconceptions some people have of those with tattoos.
"When my wife and I bought our house, there was an older couple in the house next to ours who have since becomes friends but thought, 'Oh, no, this guy has tattoos. There goes the neighborhood,' " said Bagwell, a Clarkston resident.
"It was like they were judging me from the get-go," Bagwell continued. "He had a tree that fell in his yard, and I was the first one over there with my saw to help him cut it up. So, yeah, I do get stereotyped at times."
The art is more widely accepted in today's society, but tattoos aren't without risk.
Infections, such as hepatitis and HIV, are possible, as dirty needles can pass infection from one person to another, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
"Anyone wanting to get a tattoo should also make sure their artist uses a single-use needle," said James Henry, supervisor for the Livingston County Department of Public Health.
"Watch them take the needle out of the packaging. You can even ask the artist to sterilize their equipment. You may even want to watch them wash their hands, too," he said.
The FDA has also reported allergies to various ink pigments in both permanent and temporary tattoos have been reported and can cause problems. Unwanted scar tissue may form when getting or removing a tattoo. People may have swelling or burning in the tattoo when having an MRI, according to the FDA.

The Best Tattoo Removal Experience You Will Ever Have

You know you want to get your ex off your back, literally. What's stopping you? Not the price of tattoo removal, because today's laser tattoo removal can be as affordable as getting your tattoo was in the first place.

Could it be that you're buying into all the hype and rumors about how painful laser removal can be?

Do you really believe it will be more painful than getting a tattoo!? Honestly?

If you were tough enough to sit through tiny little needles piercing your skin over and over depositing ink beneath the surface, making you bleed, and maybe even enduring a scabby healing process after - you are more than tough enough to have it removed by laser.

The main idea to understand about laser tattoo removal is that it does not work on your skin, it works on the ink. So the laser heats up the ink, under your skin, until it breaks down and disperses through your body naturally. With an experienced and qualified laser technician, your tattoo will fade in as little as one or two treatments and possibly be completely gone within five treatments depending upon the ink colors and age of the tattoo.

Having a tattoo removed with laser removal is one of the safest, fastest, and most cost effective way to get rid of your unwanted ink, and with Inflicting Ink's new Quanta Q-Plus laser tattoo removal system you can have even blue pigments removed cleanly.

Contact Jeff today for an evaluation and estimate for your tattoo removal. Haven't you waited long enough?

The Only Way to Become a Tattoo Artist

With the explosion of tattoo reality shows on television, anyone and everyone now believes that they can become a tattoo artist simply by hanging out at a school for a couple weeks and buying the right equipment.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Real tattoo artists begin their careers under the guardianship of a mentor; an experienced licensed tattoo artist who is able to explain and teach the necessary precautions, sterile procedures, business practices, and skills needed to become a responsible, quality, tattoo artist.

It's important to understand that learning how to hold a tattoo machine, and having some drawing skill are not enough to be a real tattoo artist. The real education comes through apprenticing under a reputable and experienced, licensed artist.

The other area where most people feel they may be able to get by on mediocrity, is actual artistic talent and ability. If you are only a so-so artist with a pen, pencil or paint, what makes you believe you'll do any better on human skin? The best tattoo artists have a substantial background in art, be it as an illustrator, painter, or other highly developed artistic talent in these areas.

Something to keep in mind before choosing what you may see as the easier way in a tattoo school is that the shops that will hire you as a tattoo school graduate are few and far between. Even if you do somehow manage to convince an owner to hire you, it will not be as an artist. You will start where everyone starts, as an apprentice learning the real world skills you'll need to be a quality tattoo artist.

Cosmetic Tattoos

Permanent make-up can either be one of the best treats you give to yourself, or an experience that leaves you wishing you never did it.

There are several important conditions and criteria to consider when making the decision to have cosmetic tattooing done anywhere on your body.

Cosmetic tattoos differ from artistic tattoos in that they are predominantly used by women for the purpose of simplifying their beauty routine, or in the case of accident victims, attempting to redefine their lips and brows or cover and blend scarring.

Some of the most important questions you need to ask before you decide where to get your tattoo work done concern the studio's reputation and sterile practices. This one question alone will give you enough information to decide if the shop is right for you. Basically, you want to make sure that the tattoo shop is licensed, that all the artists are licensed, and that they use sterile practices to prevent cross-contamination from blood-born pathogens and other related germs.

Because many viruses can live on unsterilized surfaces for time periods ranging from hours to days, it is extremely important that not only the equipment is sterilized using an autoclave, but the surfaces, chairs, and surrounding areas are cleaned before and after each client with sterilizing cleaners.

The second criteria to consider, is the skill of the artist who will do your tattoo work. Unlike artistic tattoos, where there is even small room for minor mistakes to be integrated into the artwork as though they don't exist, having cosmetic tattooing done offers no such protections. If the artist makes a mistake, it will be something you will have to live with, and that you will very likely not be able to cover-up or eliminate them unless you then have tattoo removal performed on the affected area.

Backyard Tattoo Parties

What is a backyard tattoo party?

A backyard tattoo party is any outdoor (or indoor) situation, where someone will tattoo people without the benefit of a sterile environment; which can include but is not limited to the ability to sterilize equipment or tools, and places where there will be wooden surfaces that cannot be sterilized with cleansers. The situation may or may not involve needles that are used more than once, but if the artist is not using disposable needles, you need to seriously reconsider your decision to get tattooed at such a function.

Understanding your risks

Here at Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo we LOVE a great tattoo party. However, we refuse to tattoo in anything less than sterile conditions; which is why we bring our sterile facility everywhere we go. With the use of our traveling tattoo truck, we are able to offer the same sterile precautions that we take in our home studio in Portsmouth at your remote location of choice. All we need is enough room to turn the truck around, and you can easily book us through our website at www.InflictingInkTattoo.com

If you are considering a backyard tattoo party, consider the guidelines imposed by the CDC with regard to tattoo artists, and the risks for skin diseases and death before you let someone touch your skin with a less than perfect needle in a less than perfect environment.

The CDC has the following recommendations for tattoo artists:

  • All artists should be licensed and use single use, disposable needles and razors for tattoing and piercing
  • All equipment needs to be sterilized, and only equipment that can either be sterilized or thrown away should be used in tattooing or body piercing procedures
  • All artists should be wearing gloves, and wash and disinfect their hands and any surfaces involved in tattooing or piercing before and after every session (wood is not an acceptable surface as it cannot be properly disinfected, and the virus that causes Hepatitis can live for up to four days on a non-disinfected surface)
  • All tools and equipment that is not disposable should be cleaned and sterilized after every use
  • In addition to work surfaces, all surfaces in the tattoo studio, such as chairs, tables, and counters should be cleaned and disinfected consistently to prevent the spread of bacteria and pathogens or viruses

How to avoid trouble

Before getting a tattoo ask the artist the following questions, and make sure the answers match up as well:
Q. Are you a licensed tattoo artist, working in a licensed facility?
A. Yes. (they should be able to also tell you which state they are licensed in, and which studio they work for)
Q. Did you apprentice under a reputable tattoo artist in a licensed sterile facility?
A. Yes. (they should also be able to provide you with the name of their teacher and the studio)
Q. Do you practice continuing education and updates to your license on a yearly basis?
A. Yes. (they should be able to help you understand the sterile processes they use, why they use them, what the law requires them to use, and what kind of continuing education updates they take yearly)

Remember that there are very few backyard situations that would be considered a sterile environment for tattooing, but a good rule of thumb to consider is whether or not you would let your dentist perform surgery on you in the same environment - because dentists have the highest incidences of cross-contamination and blood born pathogen illnesses of any environment, and if you wouldn't let them pull a tooth in the same environment, don't get a tattoo in it.

Tattoos as Art

If tattoos are art, then it would stand to reason that as art, any copying or duplicating of the images would be subject to copyright infringement laws. It really doesn't seem a case of WHERE the art appears, for instance on a human body or a piece of paper, isn't art, art? Is something that is a permanent display on skin less subject to the protection of copyright law than something that is a permanent display on canvas? Let's hope this isn't the decision that is reached in the case below, or the door is suddenly thrown wide open for body artists to have their work stolen legally.

Hangover Tattoo Lawsuit: Can You Copyright Flesh?

by David Kravets
May 27, 2011

An esoteric debate has surfaced in the legal flap over a tattoo appearing on a character in the Thursday movie release of The Hangover: Part II.

It surrounds the question of whether a work first rendered on the human body can be copyright.

The nation’s top cited copyright scholar, David Nimmer, doesn’t think so. The author of Nimmer on Copyright was an expert witness for studio Warner Bros., which is being sued on accusations of misappropriating an artist’s copyrighted tattoo originally emblazoned on Mike Tyson’s face.

David Nimmer

Since 1985, Nimmer, a UCLA law professor and practicing intellectual property attorney, has been continuously updating his late father’s Nimmer on Copyright, which LexisNexis claims is “cited in more court opinions than any other treatise on the subject of U.S. copyright law.”

He wrote the judge presiding over the tattoo case that he believes the “body, even as augmented, simply is not subject to copyright protection.”

Tattooist Victor Whitmill, who brought the case against Warner Bros., had testified that he created the image directly on Tyson’s skin.

Nimmer, though, acknowledges that his position has evolved. In a 2000 case he covered in his treatise, he “tacitly assumed that a tattoo could ‘presumably qualify as a work of graphic art, regardless of the medium in which it is designed to be affixed’ such as human flesh.”

U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry of Missouri last week blocked Nimmer from testifying on behalf of Warner Bros., after Whitmill’s attorneys objected on the basis that his filing was a legal opinion “on what copyright law should be” rather than expert testimony.

The judge, however, declined earlier this week to block the movie from debuting Thursday. The litigation is ongoing.

The lawsuit claims the movie features a “virtually exact reproduction” of the original tattoo that appears on the Stu Price character played by actor Ed Helms.

Ann Bartow, a USC law professor, accuses Nimmer of having a convenient change of heart to serve his client.

“Nimmer admits in paragraph 15 that he ‘used to’ think tattoos were eligible for copyright protection and ‘even posited one line to that effect in a footnote’ in his copyright treatise,”

Bartow wrote in a blog post. “But now he is representing Warner Brothers, he realized he was wrong.”

Nimmer, of Los Angeles, said in a telephone interview that he began to “reconsider that proposition” a decade ago because “augmentation of the body should not be copyrightable.”

In his legal filing to the judge, he explained why:

The tattoo qualifies as an original “work of visual art” that may gain ”recognized stature,” with the result that a court may enjoin its destruction. See 17 U.S.C. § 106A(a)(3)(B). After a court invokes that provision to bar him from removing his tattoo, Mr. Tyson literally may not show his own face to the world; that is, he will be required to keep Mr. Whitmill’s handiwork spread across his face, regardless of his own desires. Copyright law thereby becomes the instrument to impose, almost literally, a badge of involuntary servitude, akin to the mark with which ranchers brand the cattle they own.

It’s not the first time a tattoo artist has wanted to cash in on infringement allegations. In a 2005 federal case settled out of court, an artist who tattooed NBA star Rasheed Wallace’s right arm sued to stop the forward from “displaying” the tattoo in Nike advertisements.

Michael Kahn, Whitmill’s attorney, said in a telephone interview there has never been a court verdict about whether a copyright on a tattoo can be enforced. Whitmill has copyrighted the tattoo he inked in 2003 on the former heavyweight champ’s face.

He said he and Warner Bros. have talked settlement, but they weren’t “serious discussions.”

“Ninety-five percent of civil cases settle,” he said in a telephone interview. “Whether we’re going to be part of the 5 percent or 95 percent, I don’t know.”

Laser Tattoo Removal Your New Best Friend

If you are among the over 40 crowd with tattoos from your 20s (and before) that you are looking to get rid of, laser tattoo removal is the number one way to eliminate or minimize these kinds of older tattoos from your skin.

It may not even be that you don't like the tattoo anymore. Perhaps its simply old and faded, or the design itself is dated and unprofessional and you would like to improve it somehow. One thing that laser tattoo removal can achieve for you is to significantly lighten or remove the old tattoo, which then leaves your skin ready for another tattoo entirely or a more modern version of the same design.

Whatever you decide, remember that laser tattoo removal should be done in a sterile facility, the same way you got your tattoo to begin with, right? Also remember that there is the same (maybe a little less) amount of pain involved in getting a tattoo removed as there is in getting a tattoo to begin with. You are still altering the skin. The difference in most cases is that a laser tattoo removal will not leave the area bleeding, or create scabs. The most severe laser tattoo removal effects are blistering from extended exposure to the laser.

If you would like a laser tattoo removal consultation, or you would like to discuss your options for tattoo removal, contact Inflicting Ink and schedule an appointment for a tattoo removal evaluation at your convenience.

Tattoo Exhibit To Open; Show Us Yours

Pickens Museum Spotlights SC Tattoos

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A new exhibit will put the spotlight on tattooing in South Carolina. From June 25-Aug. 18, the Pickens County Museum of Art & History will present three exhibits: A History of Tattooing in South Carolina; J. Michael Johnson's INK Beneath the Skin: A Private Collection of Body Art; and Adornment.

The Adornment exhibit is a collection of work by members and guests of the CAFfeine Contemporary Art Forum.

According to a release from the museum, the History of Tattooing in South Carolina exhibit is representative of the diverse cultural reactions to body art. Tattooing has been practiced by the Native Americans in this area since prehistoric times. Within South Carolina, the reputation of tattoos has evolved from sinister convict symbols and the bazaar circus performers to the pride of military service. Contemporary wearers of tattoos often see their tattoos as a personal art collection. It is that sentiment that curators say inspired this exhibit.

The Pickens County Museum is located at the corner of Highway 178 and Johnson Street in Pickens. The museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. For more information, call the museum at 864-898-5963.

Tattoo Enthusiast and Boston Bruins Ference Beats Suspension

Hats off to Andrew Ference, well-known tattoo enthusiast and member of the Boston Bruins NHL team, for beating any talk of suspension from the team after their Game 7 win in the quarterfinals. A great article regarding the proposed disciplinary action and the findings of NHL senior vice president Mike Murphy follows below.

Andrew Ference not suspended

BOSTON -- Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference will not be suspended for his hit on Canadiens forward Jeff Halpern midway through the third period of Boston's 4-3 overtime win in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series.
The NHL held a disciplinary hearing with Ference via phone on Thursday morning and decided the hit wasn't worthy of a suspension.
Mike Murphy, NHL senior vice president of hockey operations, conducted the review.
"During the hearing, Ference stated that this was incidental contact; that he saw his opponent out of the corner of his eye at the last instance and braced for the collision," Murphy said Thursday in a statement. "He further stated that the contact was unintentional. As there was no apparent injury on the play, I have concluded that this incident does not warrant discipline."
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a news conference earlier Thursday afternoon that there would be no suspension.
Halpern and Ference collided on a turnover in the Bruins' defensive zone, and Ference's shoulder hit Halpern's head, dropping the Canadiens forward to the ice. A dazed Halpern was helped to the bench but returned to the game later.
Some drew comparisons between that hit and David Steckel's shot on Sidney Crosby in the Winter Classic that went unpunished by the league.
Chiarelli did not reference that hit Thursday but did say he could see why the NHL wanted to at least investigate the hit further to determine if it warranted a suspension.
Chiarelli was asked if he was worried when the hit happened that Ference would be suspended. He said when he first saw the play he thought it was incidental contact, but seeing the replay, he could see why the league was concerned.
"But when you look at the whole play, we turned the puck over at our blue and when that happens, the D are supposed to close off the rim around the wall so he [Ference] had to," Chiarelli said. "He was moving that way and what Andy said was that he just saw the player off his shoulder as he was moving 'cause he's looking up when he saw the turnover, so with his motion and the player's motion, they ran into each other."

Scratchers Give Tattoo Artists a Bad Name

The article below deals with the unfortunate popularity of underground tattooing, unlicensed tattoo artists, and non-sterile environments. If you are planning to get a tattoo, no matter where you go, please make sure that the artist is licensed, and the facility is sterile – if not for yourself, at least consider that every unlicensed artist who is tattooing you, is also tattooing underage children. In addition, you’re putting your life on the line, literally, and risking exposure to some of the nastiest skin diseases and infections on the planet, not to mention HIV and other blood born viruses.

Think before you ink!

The one place you should never go to get a tattoo

By Dan Wells
OXFORD, OH (FOX19) -
They're part-time tattooing wannabes called "Scratchers." It's a group of people who have taught
themselves the art of "permanent ink." It's growing in popularity and leaving people right here
in the Tri-state with more than just a design on their body.

From the beginning, Steve Cupp - the owner of Vertigo Tattoo in Oxford - has been outspoken
about safe tattooing practices. He's been creating body art since 1997, but what he's seen grow
in popularity lately is just plain shocking.

"You know they will come in with holes in them, puss and all kinds of stuff and they end up
hospitalized," said Cupp.

Steve's talking about the aftermath of "scratching."

"As a general rule we'll get five or six clients a week or so they will come through the door
with something God awful," said Cupp. "As it grows people think they want to be a part of it and
they'll get on the Internet and find a machine and find some needles and with absolutely no
training what so ever start trying to tattoo their friends."

This may sound harmless enough in itself, but Scratchers have been coming under serious attack
by real tattoo artists because the un-trained practice could be deadly.

"There are tons of infections you can get - Hepatitis A, B and C, there's Staph infection there
is MRSA," said Cupp.

Scratchers usually teach themselves how to ink with the help of videos and homemade tattooing
equipment, then those Scratchers put their services out there for un-knowing takers.

Alex Cooper became a victim at 16.

"I talked to one of my friends who I went to school with and he got a tattoo from a guy in a
house and I didn't know the dangers of it so I got one," said Cooper. "Saran wrap on the kitchen
table, no kind of clean substance, basically dry wiping."

"You could be Picasso with a tattoo machine but what your doing is not right," said Doug Paxton,
a professional tattoo artist. "It's always been and up and down phenomenon that it will be a fad
for a couple of years then it goes up and down its always been that way but these other reason
is it's a fast and easy way to make money."

Doug Paxton told us this type of tattooing could literally be the death of a customer if proper
health procedures aren't strictly carried out.

"It's nasty and if it's not taken care of properly, you're going to the hospital or worse," adds
Paxton.

So how popular is a tattoo? The Pew Research Center in January of 2007 said 36 percent of 18-25
year olds have at least one tattoo.

"I feel like I was extremely lucky to not have any of that happen like the mesa or any kind of
staph infection…really," said Cooper.

Professionals say if you're thinking about getting a tattoo make sure the artist follows strict
health and safety precautions with sterilization techniques monitored by health officials. They
say if a studio is run by a professional you're going to see equipment packaged in a protective
pouches that remain sealed until it is opened in front of a customer.

Local health departments regulate tattoo studios in many jurisdictions, which should give the
person getting a tattoo some piece of mind about health risks but you want to do your homework.
Make sure you ask a lot of questions before you decide to let someone put that tattoo design on
your body.

Here are some of the question you should ask.

What are the laws in your city/state on tattooing?

What certifications and/or licenses are required to tattoo legally in your city/state?

What is the procedure of operating an autoclave? what temperature must the autoclave reach
and for how long?

What is a blood-born pathogen and how do you prevent the spread of it, and cross-
contamination?

How do you thoroughly clean and disinfect needles and tubes before autoclaving?

What layer of epidermis of the skin must you not enter to prevent scarring of a tattoo?

What is plasma, and what does the leakage of plasma during a tattoo indicate?

These are only a few of the things that are absolutely necessary for a tattoo artist to know,
and if you can't answer all of these questions with concise understanding, you are not ready to
be a tattoo artist.

Tattoo Events You Might Have Missed

Or might still have time to catch! We love to share tattoo events from all over the country. Here are a few of our recent favorites.

Tattoo Festival spotlights artistry

By Lynn Peisner
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The latest trends in tattooing, as well as some ancient techniques, are the big draw at the 15th annual Atlanta Tattoo Festival, where dozens of the world’s most well-known tattoo artists will display and demonstrate their artwork.

In some cases, they may even tattoo you, if you dare.

Highlights from this year’s roster of talent include Pili Mo'o, who is known as the "Tufinga Tatau," or "traditional tatau master," who has traveled from the Canary Islands for live demonstrations of the traditional Marquesian and Polynesian tattoo style.

The three-day event features seminars, vendors and a poolside bikini contest.

New this year is the addition of live music with Six Shot Revival, Kadense, and Killer and the Savage. Other highlights include a book talk and signing with Crazy Philadelphia Eddie, a noted tattoo artist who has chronicled his life in six volumes, beginning with his start at Coney Island, where tattoos cost 50 cents apiece in 1952.

“These are not your everyday tattoos and definitely nothing like the heart with ‘mom’ written on it,” festival director Jennifer Reyes said. “Some artists are so specialized, focusing for example on just underwater sea creatures or mechanical drawings. The tattoos will absolutely blow your mind.”
Ink-N-Iron: Tattoo & Kustom Culture Festival

Hot rods, pin-up girls and tats take center stage this month at the 8th Annual Ink-n-Iron festival on the illustrious Queen Mary. This hellacious happening has something for everyone, from cabaret/burlesque shows and the motorama exhibit to screening of cult movies like Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill and Drag Strip Girl—and don’t forget the punk rock after-hours karaoke, which is the only kind of song anyone should sing after a day of being thirsty in the sun.

There’ll also be a horde of tattooing to by done by 280 of the best tat artists in the world, as well as ink contests and prizes for best sleeves, chest panel, overall male, overall female and more. But wait, there’s more! While you’re mingling with the corseted pinup girls and muscle guys, rock-a-billy, be bop and punk rock your days and nights away with live music from the incredible Detroit Cobras, The Vandals, The Buzzcocks, Anti-Flagg, Fishbone, The Paladins, The Rev Tones, Fishtank Ensemble and Vicky and the Vengents—to name but a few. It’s the prime summer event for all kittens and daddies, so flip up that pompadour, curl those bangs, supe up the roadster and roll on in and represent. (Jane Mast)

The Atlanta Tattoo Festival is this Weekend

By Ashley Hesseltine
May 2011
Hit the 15th annual event started by Tony Olivas of Sacred Heart Tattoo

Fifteen years ago, Tony Olivas, founder of Sacred Heart Tattoo (of which the original is in Little Five Points) created the Atlanta Tattoo Festival and since then, it's evolved into a weekend that draws thousands of visitors from all over the world.

This Friday through Sunday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Atlanta-Perimeter Northwest, ink lovers can experience live tattooing from world-class artists, seminars, live music from Southern rock to hip-hop, book signings (Dennis Dwyer and Crazy Philadelphis Eddie), unique vendors, contests, food, drinks, and much more.

And for the first time ever, there will be live tattoo demonstrations of the stunning traditional Marquesian and Polynesian methods by Pili Mo'o, a "traditional tatau master" who's traveling all the way from the Canary Islands for the occasion.

With all that's going on, what is Olivas looking forward to the most?

"Just everybody having a good time!" he said.

That sounds about right.

Cosmetic Tattoos and Tattoo Removal

Cosmetic tattooing can either be a wonderful experience, with great, long-lasting results, or a nightmare. If you have your permanent make-up applied by someone who is not skilled in cosmetic artistry, you will end up with something that actually looks like a tattoo, rather than the visual of delicately arched eyebrows, or soft nuance of eyeliner.

The mistakes often made in cosmetic tattooing include make-up that is too dark, misaligned, or the wrong color entirely for the client's coloring. While these mistakes can be corrected with laser tattoo removal, or natural fading and a redoing of the tattoo, it is definitely best to avoid them and seek out a professional cosmetic tattoo artist who can achieve the results you desire from the start.

The safety of cosmetic tattooing has always been discussed as a major concern. As with any tattoo, body art, or modification, the cleanliness of the tools and the studio should be your first concern. Always, without fail, visit only those studios who are licensed, sterile facilities and employ only licensed artists on their staff.

And if you are really unhappy with the results of your current permanent make-up, or it is fading in some way, you can always have laser tattoo removal done before having the tattoos done over.
Contact Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI for more information about laser tattoo removal and cosmetic tattooing.

Tattoo Regret Gaining Among Older Crowd

It is not all that unusual to have life changes and situations that cause you to re-evaluate whether it was the best idea to get that particular tattoo in that particular place. Having a tattoo removed, thanks to major improvements and advances in the areas of laser technology, is now no different than getting a tattoo. In fact, depending upon the size, ink color, and age of the tattoo, it can take less time and money to have it removed, than it did to have it put on all those years ago.

The article below discusses the trend in laser tattoo removal in greater detail.

Regret That Tattoo? You're in Good Company

Samantha Murphy
May 18, 2011

More young people are flocking to tattoo parlors to get inked under the impression that it no longer has to be forever. Some experts believe that the demand for removal technology in the future may grow exponentially, creating a greater need for qualified dermatologists. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, tattoo regrets are common — in fact, 17 percent of those who get tattoos consider getting them removed.

Now with the availability of tattoo laser removal and the introduction of new ink that can be more easily removed, tattoos are starting to mark a phase in someone's life rather than becoming a permanently inked statement.

"It's likely that more medical professionals will be trained in laser removal in the upcoming years, as tattoo removal is expected to rise," said Allen Falkner, owner of Fade Fast Laser Tattoo Removal. "Tattooing is still a growing industry and tattoo removal will most likely see a similar growth pattern."

"The more people [who] get them done, the more there will be a need for removal," added Falkner, who has been performing laser tattoo removal for four years and previously operated a tattoo studio for 15 years.

Dermatologist Brooke Jackson, founder of the Skin Wellness Center of Chicago and an assistant professor at Northwestern University said she's noticed an increased interest in tattoo removal over the years.

"I can't tell you how many people I've worked on who have tattoos who wish they had never gotten one," Jackson said, adding that interest in the technology is on the rise. "They get one as teens or in their early 20s and then need to interview to get a job and wonder why they aren't getting hired."

[10 Easy Paths to Self Destruction]

How it works

Laser removal, which is most common and widely used way to remove a tattoo, involves a beam of parallel light that delivers energy into the skin. The tattoo ink absorbs this light, causing the ink to fracture into smaller particles that are then carried off by the body's lymphatic system.

"Most lasers dispense their energy over a time of about one-thousandth of a second; however, a tattoo removal laser uses a smaller amount of energy over a time period that is about 1,000 times more rapid," said Gregory Laurence, a laser and cosmetic surgeon at Memphis, Tenn.-based Germantown Aesthetics. "This causes a vibration effect rather than a heat effect."

"The colored pigment is literally shaken up and broken up, allowing the body to come and remove the freed-up pigment," Laurence said.

David Bank, a dermatologist and the president of the New York State Society for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, said a tattoo's color, depth and the chemical composition of the ink all affect how it responds to laser light.

For example, black, red, dark orange and dark blue tattoos will usually respond relatively quickly to treatment with laser. However, green, purple, brown, light orange and light blue colors may respond more slowly. But overall, most tattoos can be successfully removed, given a sufficient number of treatments — most typically, between six and eight sessions and at intervals of six to eight weeks. [Are 'I Love Mom' Tattoos Still Popular?]

Since the laser light selectively targets the undesired ink, other tissues remain largely unaffected. However, some report minimal discomfort, comparing it to the sensation of being snapped with a rubber band against the skin.

"In some cases, patients seek removal right away, even within the first week of tattoo placement," said Laurence. "But actually the best time to start removal is four months or longer after the placement of the tattoo."

Other drawbacks

There are some downsides associated with any procedure involving body modification, Falkner said.
"In the hands of an untrained individual, a laser can cause scars, burns, scars and other forms of damage to the skin and underlying tissue," Falkner said. "However, if the machines are operated by qualified and trained technicians working under the supervision of a medical director, the procedure is actually quite safe."

The cost of the removal of the tattoo is also typically 10 to 20 times as expensive as the artwork.
Some people who are uncertain about getting a tattoo are turning to a type of permanent ink that is engineered so it can be removed more easily with minimal lasering. (Infinitink, from the company Freedom2, is offered at various nationwide tattoo parlors.)

According to Freedom2, 25 percent of all people over the age of 18 in the United States already have a tattoo and another 25 percent are thinking about getting one but haven’t.

"An Infinitink tattoo is just as permanent as any other, but it can be removed with minimal lasering," the company noted on its website. "It's there forever, unless you change your mind."

The Infinitink tattoo is applied by inserting ink through the skin just like normal tattooing, but according to the site, scientists have created an alternative to help the dissolution of the pigment when passed over with a laser.

"That means less expense, less time and less pain," the company said.

However, since it's still a new technique that needs more testing, some doctors are still undecided about the alternative.

"Time will really tell if it is beneficial," Jackson said.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Right for You?

You loved it when you got it, that lovely little - or large - tattoo on your shoulder, thigh, etc (choose body part), but now it's faded and doesn't hold the same appeal, or you've broken up with the person who inspired it, or you just need a change.

Do you have it covered-up, or is laser tattoo removal maybe the way to go? Here are some guidelines to help you decide which decision is the right one for you.

First, gather the information on the kinds of tattoo removal that are available to you. Learn about laser tattoo removal and that it is significantly less painful than getting the tattoo was in the first place, and also comparable in price.

The main factors in determining whether you are a candidate for laser tattoo removal, or if you can (or want to) opt for a cover-up tattoo instead, are size of the tattoo, and darkness of color. In both instances say professional tattoo artists, it becomes much harder, and more expensive to remove the tattoo entirely. You always have the option of course of having laser removal done to lighten the tattoo, and thereby make it easier to cover with something else.

Though this is not the least expensive option, it is the one that will give you the most beautiful results if your tattoo is very dark. Even large tattoos that do not have an abundance of dark ink colors can be removed completely with laser tattoo removal treatments over a period of time.

Visit Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI for a consultation about laser tattoo removal. We use a Quanta Q Plus C and T laser system that can remove the entire spectrum of colors with the least amount of discomfort and at a cost that is comparable to getting a tattoo.

How to Tell If You Found a Good Tattoo Artist

The popularity of tattoos continues to be a statement toward everything from culture to fashion. With so many options to choose from, how do you know when you've found a good (great maybe?) tattoo artist that you can stick with?

Read their resume. Most tattoo artists learn in apprentice situations as there are few tattoo schools or schools offering courses in the art form. This apprenticeship should have been under a licensed, professional tattoo artist, with an emphasis on teaching the concepts of sterile procedures and environments. Because tattooing involves contact with blood, tattoo artists need to be highly skilled in the prevention of diseases that can come from blood born pathogens and non-sterile procedures.

Look over their work/portfolio. A good tattoo artist also needs to be a good artist. Let's face it, if all they can do is follow stencils that someone else has made, they will only ever be able to copy the work of others. Tattoo artists that show art degrees on their resumes, or at the very least have a portfolio that showcases their talent as an artist, are much more likely to be able to transform your dream tattoo into a physical reality on your skin.

Walk in for a tattoo consultation with one of our highly skilled, licensed artist at Inflicting Ink Tattoo in Portsmouth RI. We are a sterile tattoo facility licensed to tattoo by the State of Rhode Island. The health and welfare of our clients comes first at Inflicting Ink.

Skin Deep - Where Sterile Tattoo Environments Meet

A reminder that although the science of tattooing would appear to be quite simple, the importance of getting tattooed by a licensed professional tattoo artist, in a sterile tattoo facility cannot be understated or ignored. Seek professional tattooing in a sterile environment at Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio.

Science of tattoo art is only skin deep

Marie McCarty
25 April 2011

As tattooing becomes increasingly socially acceptable, many college students are itching to be inked for the first time or to add to their body art collection.

For a significant and potentially life-changing experience, the science of tattooing is relatively simple. Tattooing was transformed in 1891 by the invention of the electric tattoo machine, and has remained practically unchanged. Today’s tattoo artists only need a few items: an electric tattoo machine, needles, ink and a willing participant.

Modern tattoos are done with an electric tattoo machine — a simple tool based on a rotary system. There is a needle attached to a circular spinning device, allowing it to move up and down into the skin. The needles attached to the machine pierce the skin approximately 50 times per second and do not go deep into the skin.

The needles used in a tattoo machine are quite different from the needles doctors use, so needle phobes need not fret when considering being inked. Tattooing calls for hypodermic needles, which are no more than sharp tubes. There are two kinds of tattooing needles: liners and shaders. Both must be sterilized and used only once per person, according to California law.

When the tattoo machine is equipped with the appropriate needles, the needles are dipped into tattoo ink. Tattoo ink used for intradermal tattoos is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and is used to give tattoos color. The term “ink” is used loosely because most of the substances used aren’t inks at all. So-called tattoo ink is made of two basic components: pigments and carriers. Pigments are anything that can be finely ground to provide color and are mixed with a carrier. Carriers are liquids used to deliver the pigments beneath the skin, distribute the pigment evenly and keep it from clumping together. The ink is injected beneath the outer layer of skin where the color remains. Tattooing is basically implanting tiny granules of color into the skin. The pigment is held in place by the skin’s immune system’s phagocytic cells. Phagocytic cells engulf the color particle, allowing the skin to hold the color while it heals.

Once the tattoo is fully healed, the color particle is trapped in place by tissue between the first and second layer of skin, the epidermis and dermis.

As time goes by and skin ages, the pigment recedes into the dermis. This puts more tissue between the tattoo and the top layer of skin, making the tattoo blurry and more difficult to see. However, don’t let that put the kibosh on future tattoo ideas. This process happens throughout decades, so a tattoo will be in its prime for many years.

While the science of tattooing is simple, a tattoo stays with its owner forever and should not be done without serious consideration and research, especially with larger pieces. So, needless to say, they are an immense commitment. Large tattoos can cost as much as a car, and will require many sessions. Before becoming living art, keep in mind that it will be painful. Choose a tattoo artist based on skill, not price, and try not to be arbitrary or impulsive.

People from all walks of life have tattoos of every style and size. Knowing the fundamentals of tattooing grants ink lovers with the facts they need before sitting in the chair and can help shape decisions they can be happy about for a lifetime.

Cancer Patient Inspired to Learn Cosmetic Tattooing

An amazing story follows below about a woman who survived cancer and was inspired, by her own experience with cosmetic tattooing to replace her eyebrow and lip discoloration, to become a medical and cosmetic tattoo artist. Her gift back to the community, prior to insurance companies deciding to pay for the procedure, was giving free areola tattoos to breast cancer survivors - she is well-known for the lifelike high quality of these tattoos. He generosity and talent gives cancer patients and medical trauma survivors a new lease on life with lifelike medical and cosmetic tattoos.

Tattoo artist helps cure cancer blues

April 25, 2011
Tracy Hanes

At age 26, Kyla Gutsche was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. But surgery and chemotherapy treatments were only the beginning of her ordeal.

Distressed by her appearance from the side-effects of chemo, she turned to a tattoo artist to replicate her lost eyebrows and simulate lipstick. But a severe allergic reaction to the pigments disfigured her lips and caused lumpy granulomas to form.

Gutsche, a professor of art and art history at Oxford University in England at the time, sought out plastic surgeon Dr. Jean-Paul Tiziano, a world leader in micropigmentation, or medical tattooing, who repaired her damaged features.

The experience inspired Gutsche to learn the skill herself, so she apprenticed with Tiziano. Now she runs Cosmetic Transformations in Peterborough.

“As a cancer patient, you don’t want to be reminded that you are sick,” says Gutsche, now 37 and cancer-free. “You don’t have eyebrows and hair and people stare. It’s very hard because you don’t recognize yourself. You look in the mirror and don’t recognize yourself or don’t feel whole.”

She says wellness goes beyond physical recovery. Psychological studies have proven that when people believe they look better, they feel better.

Although Gutsche offers esthetic work such as permanent makeup, most of her work is with medical patients and cancer survivors.

She works with Peterborough plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Bert Van Brenk. She is renowned for the 3-D areolas she tattoos on breast-cancer patients who have undergone reconstruction. Male cancer patients often come to her for replacement of lost eyebrows or facial stubble.

OHIP now funds areola tattooing, but Gutsche used to perform the service for free for patients who couldn’t afford it.

Gutsche, who trained in England, France and Vancouver, draws on Leonardo da Vinci’s principles of light and shade to render nipples realistically. She won an international medical innovation award for Titian Wash, a skin and scar camouflage technique inspired by the glazing techniques of Renaissance artist Titian.

Her patients come from across the GTA, although one woman travelled from Kenya after reading about her on the Internet. One A-list Hollywood celebrity has also used her services.

One of her favourite clients was a woman in her late 70s who had Gutsche tattoo areolas on her reconstructed breasts. The patient and her husband, in his early 80s, brought a men’s magazine to the clinic as an illustration of how they wanted they wanted it to look.

“She was so pleased, she flashed her breasts to everyone in the office and said to her husband, ‘Honey, tonight we’re making love with the lights on!’ ” Gutsche says. “That’s why I love my job. It isn’t about the cosmetic side; it’s about making people feel more confident and not having to think about what made them insecure.”

She uses Biotic Phocea pigments, the only ones approved as a medical device for implantation into the skin. Although pigments commonly used by tattoo artists are approved by Health Canada, Gutsche points out they are approved for cosmetic use, not implantation.

She continues to lobby Health Canada for legislation to regulate tattoo pigment safety. In addition to the risk of allergic reactions, she says the pigments can interfere with MRIs or radiation treatments.

“Educating physicians and other tattoo artists about pigment safety is a cause dear to me,” she says.

Several years ago, Gutsche returned to her hometown of Calgary and looked up an old high school crush, Eliot Beaubien, on the Internet. He is a nephrologist (kidney specialist) practicing in Peterborough. They married three years ago.

Although Gutsche had fertility-sparing surgery while battling her ovarian cancer, she suffered five miscarriages during a previous marriage. She and Beaubien have had two children: Alexander, 18 months, and Althea, six months.

“We have these two special kids and it shows you, miracles really can happen,” she says.

Gutsche is a long-time volunteer with Look Good, Feel Better, a program that teaches cancer patients how to apply makeup so they can feel normal again. She also co-organized (with Norma Butcher and Shelley Peeples) the first Walk of Hope for Ovarian Cancer in Peterborough. The third-annual walk will be on Sept. 11.

The first Walk of Hope was held just four days after she had given birth to her first child by Caesarian section, so she wasn’t able to participate. But her husband and newborn son took part.

Gutsche says ovarian cancer is not well known, even though one in 70 Canadian women will be diagnosed with it.

Many other fundraisers, such as the Terry Fox Run, do not contribute funds to ovarian cancer research or treatment. Ovarian Cancer Canada is the only national charity dedicated to overcoming the disease, which is one of the deadliest cancers if it’s not caught in the early stages. Ninety per cent of women will survive if detection is early.

“It’s the disease that whispers before it roars,” says Gutsche. “A lot of the symptoms, such as bloating, cramping, weight changes, are chalked up to menopause or as flu.”

When Gutsche started having symptoms, her doctor dismissed her concerns as either flu or job-related stress. Her cancer was discovered only when an ovarian cyst ruptured, leading to the early diagnosis that saved her life.

Tattoo Removal Serious Business for Former Gang Members

We tend to consider the cosmetic implications of tattoos whenever considering a cover-up tattoo or laser tattoo removal. One aspect that is less common is the idea that a tattoo could be used to stereotype, categorize, or even in some cases bring death or injury to its wearer. In the case of gang tattoos, and former gang members, this is precisely the reason reformed gang members now need help having their gang tattoos removed professionally. Everyone deserves a second chance.

Former Gang Members Getting Help With Cost of Tattoo Removal

By David Mance
May 6th, 2011

Some former gang members trying to turn their lives around are finding it hard to escape the gang lifestyle because of their visible tattoos. Now, a new program aims to help them pay the price of the high cost of tattoo removal.

"They made me feel good, it made me feel that I had power, if I wanted something I could get it," says one former Sunnyside gang member about the tattoos on his hand and fingers. We've distorted the voice and are not showing you his face to protect his identity. We've also blurred out his tattoos, tattoos he once wore proudly, and committed crimes to earn.

"Robbing, stealing, you know, buying stuff you shouldn't have been buying," he says.

But now he's left the gang lifestyle behind in hopes for a better future, and he wants to get rid of his tattoos, so he'll have more job opportunities.

"Once they see this, you know, how can they know they can trust you?" he says.

He's turned to a group called Sunnyside's Promise, who's helping him realize the importance of tattoo removal.

"Some of them are insignias that are gang affiliated, even if they're not, they're still parts of their life that has an identifying aspect to it," says Sunnyside's Promise executive director Mark Baysinger.

The tattoos are removed at this clinic in Yakima. Depending on the tattoo, it can take six to eight laser treatments to remove at $135 a pop, a cost out of reach for many Sunnyside families.

"When you have kids that are coming from families that do not have the money, it's a very difficult task for them to be able to make that step," says Baysinger.

So far ten former gang members have had the slate wiped clean so to speak. This teenager knows he'll be better off without the tattoos.

"I'll be able to go farther than I already am," he says.

Sunnyside's Promise is using grant money to help about 90 former gang members transition out of the gang lifestyle through tattoo removal and other services.

Tattoo Culture Alive and Well

While it may be difficult for some to accept or realize, the art of tattooing is here to stay. With its long history, steeped in cultural and tribal roots, for those who are tattoo fans, nothing will convince them that the future of tattoos are in any danger at all from non-supporters. Very often, tattoo fans become the people who dedicate their lives to preserving the art form, as well as supporting any efforts by others to do so.

Once taboo, tattoos now the new fashion statement

Kathmandu, May 7 (IANS) When Lokesh Varma, the son of an affluent army family in New Delhi, announced he wanted to forswear his MBA degree and his job with a multinational company to become a tattoo artist, his parents were speechless with horror.

"Tattoos were then thought to be something only sported by low life - bikers, goons and drug addicts," the 27-year-old, manning his tattoo stall at the Nepal Tattoo Convention, the first international tattoo convention held in Kathmandu last month, told IANS.

"My parents thought tattoos were not respectable and tattooing could not be a viable profession accepted by society. But that was before cable television came and changed people's way of thinking."

Varma today runs his tattoo studio, Devilztattooz, with his wife Sanobar. It is a thriving business that imports paints and equipment from abroad - the US and Thailand - with a basic design that could take half an hour, costing Rs.3,000.

"It's more channels like Discovery that bring images of distant different cultures to your home that helped tattoos get social acceptance, more than Angelina Jolie or other tattooed film stars. If you see something every day, there comes a day when you want to try it out too."

Bijay Gurung, a partner at Mohan's Tattoo Inn, the pioneering tattoo studio in Kathmandu that hosted the convention, says tattoos have been an integral part of Asia's indigenous culture. So are piercings.

"The Tharu community, who were the original residents of the Terai plains, tattoo their bodies as part of their ancient culture," says the 37-year-old, who besides tattoos and piercings, also sports blue hair.

When Gurung, the son of a British Army soldier who grew up in Pokhara city, first coloured his hair blue while still in school, the result was traumatic.

"It was in 1992 and I was summoned by the police," he says. "The police chief told me, you have a choice: either cut your hair or we will put you in prison. I thought it was my life and I had the right to dye my hair any colour I wanted. But what can a vulnerable teen do against the system!"

Though forced to do the cops' bidding at that time, Gurung has returned to the same style.

"I am the way I express myself," he says. "We decided to host the convention because we want the world to know that tattoos have been a part of our culture and remove the stigma on them. Also, in the year the Nepal Tourism Board is promoting Nepal as a prime tourist destination, we want to develop our country as a cultural, tattoo destination."

Tattoo artistes from France, Italy, Germany, Thailand and India gathered in an upmarket hotel in Kathmandu for the convention, subtly marking the status change in an adornment once regarded as the hallmark of drug addicts and dreadlocked hippies.

For French tattoo artist Laurent Maina, tattooing is a form of spiritual expression. The 39-year-old from Marseilles does only "Buddhist tattoos", an intricate mesh of divine figures and accompanying holy flora.

Unlike the nude girl tattoos pulp fiction attributed to sailors, clients seek tattoos of the Buddha, Shiva, and even Sai Baba. Holy Tibetan phrases are also in vogue along with lines from the Gita.

But though Bollywood has recently joined the vogue - with stars like Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan sporting tattoos - the pros say India is still wary of experimenting deeply.

"Indians go for small tattoos - mostly names, tribal art or customised designs," Chitra Kumar Chhetri, whose Yogiz Tattoo Inn opened in Siliguri in 2010, told IANS.

"There are no demands for full-sleeve tattoos and large tattoos on the face. However, we have managed to create a market in eastern India."

The first Yogiz Tattoo Inn opened in Kalimpong in 2005 and gets clients from Kolkata, Assam, Orissa, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and even Bhutan. This year, a branch is planned in Assam.

Tattoo artists are unanimous that hygiene is essential for the profession.

"We insist on using disposable syringes or sterilised ones for each client to prevent blood-borne diseases like HIV/AIDS and hepatitis," says Varma. "It's not only the client but also the artist who's at risk."

Laser Tattoo Removal to See Huge Growth

By our estimates, there are certainly no shortage of people who are very happy with their tattoos, and will continue to get ink as long as they have the spare room on their skin to place it. However, there is also a growing group of adults, who for whatever reason, are experiencing tattoo regret at a growing rate. And as Yin has a Yang, tattoos go hand in hand with tattoo removal. Laser tattoo removal is poised to grow in demand over the next few years, and Inflicting Ink is ready.

USA WEEKEND Survey Defines a Generation of Changes
The Personal Computer Changed Lives for the Better; Gourmet Coffee and Princess Diana are Tops; Looking Ahead, Tattoo Regrets Could Fuel New Professions

This past September, as part of USA WEEKEND Magazine's 25th anniversary celebration, readers were invited to share what influenced them most over the past quarter century. More than 6,000 readers completed the survey and commented. Full results will be announced in the December 26 edition of the newspaper magazine.

Results show that over the past 25 years, USA WEEKEND readers were influenced by the personal computer, cell phones, the passing of Princess Diana, Harry Potter, gourmet coffee, and Forrest Gump. Survey results include these findings:

* We have a love/hate relationship with our cell phones. 64% say cell phones changed their lives for the better, but at 33%, it was also the #1 invention that changed the lives of readers for the worse.

* Readers trimmed the fat from their diets, but not the fun. Fat-free food is the favorite food trend of 26% of our readers and cholesterol-lowering drugs were the medical advance that made 41% of our readers lives better. But the #1 favorite food trend for readers is gourmet coffee (29%), followed by the aforementioned fat-free food and then the guilty pleasures of cupcakes ranked #3 at 15%.

* The sudden unexpected deaths of two youthful and promising figures had a profound effect on 50% of our readers. Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy, Jr. ranked #1 and 2, with Pope John Paul II, who died at the age of 84, in third place.

* In light of today's challenging economy, the survey revealed a potential growth area for employment. Tattoos ranked as the #1 least-favorite fashion trend of the last 25 years, leading one reader to note, "the best future profession for making money will be tattoo removal."

The survey was announced in the September 12 issue of USA WEEKEND, inviting readers to log onto usaweekend.com to share their thoughts on the past 25 years and be entered to win one of 25 prizes. The multiple-choice questionnaire was open to the public from Sunday, Sept. 12 to Monday, Sept. 20. Full results can be found in December 26 editions of the news magazine and online at www.usaweekend.com.

Laser Tattoo Removal

Is it for you?

When considering the methods for your tattoo removal, it would be wise to look at all of your options. Decide upon how much of your tattoo you want removed, whether you would like it to be completely removed, or simply faded, and then decide on a treatment plan.

If you select a complete removal, or if your tattoo is very dark and you would like to lighten or fade it only, laser tattoo removal would be a wise choice for several reasons. Remember that tattoo removal cremes are largely ineffective unless they have been prescribed by a doctor, and even then may carry substantial side effects to the skin from use.

Laser tattoo removal is the single most effective way to remove an unwanted tattoo. Laser light works on the ink in the skin only, heating it up and breaking it down for dispersal and removal through the body's natural systems. Likened to the sensation of what it feels like to get at tattoo in the first place, laser removal is not the most pain free option, however the results are definitely worth the minor discomfort.

A professional tattoo removal studio will have no difficulty removing your tattoo, with very limited and minor side effects. The most prevalent side effect among those removal clients who suffer from side effects at all, is a slight blistering of the skin at the treatment site. This is caused when a tattoo is particularly deep or dark, and the skin becomes heated from extended treatments for removal.

Surgical methods of tattoo removal can be overly expensive, and have long term side effects that are completely unnecessary in today's changing technologically advanced arena. In the past, tattoo removal clients who opted for dermabrasion and cryosurgery were left with disfigured skin and scarring in the area treated.

Finally, when weighing your options, the methods, and the results, consider that dollar for dollar, laser tattoo removal is also the most cost effective method for getting rid of unwanted body art. Contact us today for a tattoo removal consultation.
