Tattoo and Body Piercing Infections and Treatments

Tattoos and body piercings, by their very nature, are basically wounds. And like all wounds are open to infection. With more than 16% of the American population sporting some form of body art or piercing, it then behooves us to be fully aware of the dangers and treatment for our newly inflicted wounds, including what to look for in signs of an infected tattoo or piercing. It also goes without saying that because this is technically an invasive procedure, you should choose an above-board shop that operates according to the Department of Health codes in your area and practices sterile procedures from start to finish.

As always, if you are in doubt about what looks good and what doesn't concerning your tattoo, seek medical attention immediately. Still, there are some hard and fast rules that do apply when determining whether something has 'gone bad' with your tattoo or body piercing.

With reference to body jewelry, the area around the piercing will definitely show signs of redness for approximately a week to 10 days. Expect it to appear 'angry', although anything in the range of swelling or colored discharge should be considered suspect and treatment arranged at once. Genital piercings in particular are subject to increased risks of infection due to the nature of the area being pierced. Any indication, no matter how minor, that these piercings are not healing well, needs to be addressed with a medical professional as soon as possible.

Tattoos can be a bit more complex in determining whether an area is infected or not. Because there are in effect a myriad number of small wounds inflicted on the skin, the area will become somewhat swollen, a bit weepy, and possibly tender in the days following the treatment. You should be given instructions by the tattoo artist regarding how to care for your tattoo in the days following the application.

If the weeping begins to smell badly, or show signs of discoloration, or if a fever or body aches accompany this symptom, seek medical treatment immediately. Instances of infected tattoos have been reported where serious medical conditions have resulted, so infection needs to be taken quite seriously.

The final stage of your tattoo may include some shedding or flaking of the of skin. It is important not to pick at the area, and to keep it very clean. Moisturize the site and redress it after washing with a mild unscented non-bar soap as needed to keep the tattoo free from infection.

With proper care and maintenance, your body piercing and tattoos will continue to provide you with a lifetime of infection-free healthy enjoyment.

Tattoos in the Workplace ~ The Stigma Finally Dies

As any tattoo enthusiast will tell you, there are, or have been in the past, certain places where you just know you're going to have to cover-up your body art. Places like, corporate offices, and certain family gatherings, where revealing your tattoo may be frowned upon.

Happily with the abundance of young people now sporting their own body art and custom tattoos, and being very proud to do so, the issue is seeing some light at the end of a very long tunnel involving persecution, bias, and judgment, especially in the workplace.

The following article touches nicely on the fact that with more and more companies being run by younger executives, the prevalence of not only tattoos but piercings and body art in general is leading a trend to rid ourselves of the stigma that different equals wrong.

The full article follows below.

Tattoo or Taboo?

The negative stigma on tattoos in the workplace may be dying out

By Jen Davis
November 17, 2010

Junior Taryn Blume got a tattoo of dog paws on her foot a few years ago and would only cover it up for a job interview, "depending on the shoes I was wearing," she said.

However, John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas thinks younger employers are less likely to stigmatize against untraditional appearances.

A Pew Center 2010 study found 15 percent of adults from the baby boomer generation have tattoos, compared to 38 percent of 18-29 year-olds. Out of that 38 percent, half of the 18-29 year-olds have two to five tattoos.

"I have four tattoos in places you can see if I'm wearing a t-shirt," said Jordan Smith, a junior on the football team. "I don't care if people see them and I don't think it will affect me getting a job because I can hide them if I really need to."

A tattoo on Jordan's arm reads "Love" or "Hate," depending on which side up you read it.

Senior basketball player Amanda Smith said she does care about where her two tattoos are, and made a point to place them in areas that would not be visible in work clothes. "I thought about placement a lot before I got them because I didn't want them to affect my job opportunities," she said.

Sarah Bolasevich, another Stonehill student, says that body art shouldn't be a concern of employers to begin with. "If people truly appreciate my mind, they won't care about my ink," she says.

Bolasevich has two tattoos, a bracelet that means "all will be well in the end" strung together with the word ‘hope' and her favorite Emily Dickinson poem on her rib cage, "just in case I forget that I stand for the service of others," she said.

Ryder Kern and Cameron Marston said that if you have a tattoo that you're happy you got, and that really means something to you, you shouldn't have to worry about hiding it.

"My tattoo is family oriented and I got it with my older brother, which was a bonding experience" Kern said. "I don't think that a tattoo anywhere other than my face would get in the way of being hired."

Marston, who has two tattoos, also has them in places that can easily be covered but doesn't worry about them in terms of his career plans.

Marston has one on his chest depicting a compass rose with an inspirational quote, and one on his ribs of his family crest and his grandmother's name.

"Both are very meaningful to me" he said.

Tattoos on Minors Gaining Attention by Authorities

Inflicting Ink Tattoo shop in Portsmouth RI will refuse to tattoo any minor under any conditions, and does not support underground tattooing of any kind. We are happy to see the authorities increasing the activity to stop this deadly practice in other states and push consistently for stricter laws and guidelines concerning sterile facilities and tattoo practices, for all tattoo shops in RI.

The following article deals with a situation in Pennsylvania where a minor was tattood by a 28 year old man in his home. The girl was 14 years old. The full article follows below.

Man charged with giving minor a tattoo in Noxen Twp.

By Michael J. Rudolf
November 2, 2010

A 28-year-old man has been charged with giving a tattoo to an underage girl without her parents' consent in Noxen Township.

State police charged Christopher C. Everetts with corruption of minors and illegal tattooing or body piercing. Police listed Everetts' address as the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre.

However, previous criminal records in Luzerne County give his address as Dallas.

According to the police complaint, on April 23 Trooper Robert Kennedy

responded to a home in Noxen Township by the parents of a 14-year-old girl.

The parents said their daughter had tattoos, which she had kept hidden from them for more than two weeks.

When Kennedy interviewed the girl, she said on April 6, she was at a swimming hole along Tannery Street with some friends when Everetts and another person arrived and joined the conversation.

The girl said the subject turned to the tattoos that Everetts had. Everetts offered to give the girl a tattoo for $20, the report says.

The girl ran home, got money, and returned to the swimming hole. She told police she and her sister went with Everetts to a house on Stull Road.

While at the house, the report says, Everetts took out some tattooing equipment and cleaned them. He proceeded to tattoo a four-inch black cross on the back of the girl's neck, and a crescent moon on her hip.

The girl paid Everetts and left.

The girl's sister told police she witnessed Everetts do the tattooing. She said Everetts offered to give her a tattoo as well, but she declined.

Police said they were unable to locate Everetts until Oct. 25, when they were notified that he was incarcerated in Luzerne County.

When Trooper Steven Scoble questioned Everetts, he acknowledged that he gave the girl a tattoo, but disagreed with the amount he was paid, saying he charged the girl $50. Scoble said that without being asked,

Everetts stated that he "had an idea" that the girl was underage, but did not know she was 14.

Everetts was placed in the Wyoming County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Body Piercing Remorse

Where do the holes go?

Far from being regretful, our lives and circumstances, likes and dislikes, can and do change as we grow and mature. Anyone in the business of tattoo removal can attest that even among the most hardcore fans, there can be moments and situations that arise where removal is not only an option but a necessity.

The rise of body piercing among the youth of the country gives credence to speculation of just how the next generation sees themselves when it comes to wearing a nose or chin piercing at 40 or 50 while simultaneously bouncing a child, or grandchild, on their knee. Without giving rise to the stereotype and stigma, there is a certain degree of change that accompanies the birth of a child.

Body piercings and tattoos seem to be at the forefront of these alterations, at least from a physical perspective. When even a celebrity factor comes into focus on the matter, like the recent admission by Christina Aguilera that she has abandoned most of her prolific body piercings since the birth of her son Max, one would suppose that a changing trend was being observed rather than mere maternal instincts for presenting our children with the best examples of a life well lived.

Unlike laser tattoo removal where the technology now exists to remove virtually all of a tattoo as well as the resultant scarring in less time and for less money than ever before, there is no procedure for 'removing' body piercings; the hole will either close, or it will not. If it does not, is the bearer then left with not only a visible reminder of days gone by, but also an invited fascination from others more compelling than the jewelry ever was? Or will these 'holes' simply become known as the remnants of choices made in our youth that no longer serve us, and for which we have no way to fill, now that the glitz and glamour is gone?

In Aguilera's case it is the former, with the admirer being the very person for whom she felt compelled to remove the jewelry to begin with; her son Max. The hole has become a fascination for him, leaving his mother more concerned than ever about the day when she will have to divulge where more similar points could be found on her body, and field the discussion about whether he will want to pierce his own, starting the cycle anew.

Rank the 'Tattoo Talk' With Drugs and Alcohol as a Parent

Underage tattooing has been a nightmare issue for both parents and children alike in recent years. The notoriety of young celebrities who bare their tattooed skin for their younger fans to admire opens the debate concerning role model behavior and presentation to our under 18 crowds.

In ancient circles, tattooing the body was a form of ritual and art-work. Tribal tattoos were given to children very young, with the entire tribe engaging in the structured and carefully planned family-type activity of initiation involved in giving and receiving the tattoo was a major part of this culture. This practice extends into the present day in tribal society, as well as, in some cases, extreme body piercing.

While we are not a tribal society, modern social pressures for teens in particular, together with a popular cult-ure of rising stars with little to no concern for the image they are portraying to their younger fans, has brought the issue of underage tattooing to the forefront of many family discussions. Like the tribal society that engages in ritual tattooing through the family unit, the discussion of underage tattooing needs to be initiated within the same family unit here in the United States.

Far from being a social problem, although one could argue for stricter rulings for tattoo artists who are caught tattooing children without parental consent, the issue of tattooing on minors needs to be addressed at the much more intimate level of in home discussions and guidelines for acceptable behavior, limits and consequences, by parents to their children.

School districts in some areas of the country are speculating about the importance of tattoo education for teens in particular regarding the laws and the dangers of underage and underground tattooing in unsterile facilities. While the topic is definitely a great health concern, and needs to be addressed in that manner, the onus still falls on the parents of teens to be certain of their child's activity by becoming more involved in the lives of their children.

When a 14 year old girl can obtain a tattoo from a stranger, the obvious concern needs to extend much further than the kinds of skin troubles she can contract from dirty needles; although that too is definitely an issue ~ perhaps concern for whether she would make it out of a stranger's home alive might also need to be talked about at the family dinner table.

Definitely lobby for educating children to the health dangers of underground and underage tattooing in schools and anywhere else children are prone to hang-out, but make the major portion of this issue your issue and protect your children by talking to them about making wise choices concerning their bodies and health now. Factor this one in as one of those topics you need to talk to your kids about, up there with drugs, alcohol and sex.

Inflicting Ink supports state laws and regulations regarding underage tattooing and sterile facilities by refusing to tattoo minors, and maintaining a sterile tattoo facility that exceeds every guideline in RI and the United States at this time.

Thanks sent to Inflicting Ink for Rhode Island Blood Center Blood Drive with Cardi's Furniture in South Kingstown, RI

Nov 6, 2010: Rhode Island Blood Center Blood Drive with Cardi's Furniture
Cardi's Furniture, South Kingstown, RI

Dear Inflicting Ink Tattoo,

Thank you for sponsoring the Cardi’s Furniture blood drives on November 6th. Your support helped the Rhode Island Blood Center to ensure a safe & adequate blood supply to our hospitals. A total of 42 pints were collected between all 4 locations. Since one pint can save up to three lives, your blood drive potentially benefited up to 126 people in Rhode Island and beyond!
  • South County Commons: 15 (5 sign ups to become bone marrow donors)
  • Swansea: 6
  • South Attleboro: 16
  • West Warwick: 5
Also, the Inflicting Ink event at the South County Commons was a huge success. Not only did we have the 2nd highest collection we have ever had at that drive, we really got the message out that you can donate blood if you have a tattoo in the state of Rhode Island.

All blood donations will make a difference in someone’s life. A significant amount of the blood collected at our blood drives will go towards treating children with leukemia, automobile accident victims and patients needing organ transplants. It is because of generous folks like yourself, who host blood drives, that we are able to give hope to patients and their families.

Please extend my thanks to everyone else that helped to make the day a success. It was a pleasure working with you again and I look forward to our next drive. Saturday, February 12th 2011.

Also, I believe Frank and Glenn will be working on a new Providence Journal ad for our 2011 blood drives and will be in touch soon once they have some proofs to show.

Till then, take care.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Siegal

White Sox Fan Needs Tattoo Removal

White Sox fan sues for backward tattoo

By Sahadev Sharma

CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox fan Gina Bebis wanted to use part of her body as an homage to her favorite team, but the tattoo turned out to be as disappointing as what happened on the field for the South Siders.

On June 5, just before the Sox went on a run that would eventually take them to first place in the American League Central Division, Bebis went to have the White Sox logo surrounded by purple clovers tattooed on her thigh.

One problem: the tattoo was applied backward, which mirrored what happened to her team after the All-Star break.

Bebis, who underwent numerous laser removal sessions, is suing the tattoo shop and the artist for an amount not to exceed $50,000 for the cost of the laser removal, the cost of a cover-up tattoo, and money for the pain and suffering she endured from the laser treatments.

Attempts to call the tattoo parlor went unanswered, and a visit to the shop proved fruitless.

According to the suit, the artist prepared a proof of the design, which was approved by Bebis, and the artist proceeded to ink the tattoo on Bebis' thigh.

So was the proof placed on Bebis' backwards?

"Yes, it seems [the artist] applied the proof flipped over, and that is how it ended up backwards," said Bebis' attorney, Daniel Fabbri. "We can only speculate as to that, since it is such an obvious mistake on his part, we can't come up with any other possible way he did this."

A few artists at Insight Studios in Ukrainian Village -- who asked that their names not be used -- were willing to shed some light on how something like this usually is avoided. They claimed that before using permanent ink, the artwork would be stenciled on the body and approved by the person receiving the tattoo. They were adamant that this is standard practice and a step that is never skipped. It is unclear whether a non-permanent stencil was ever done on Bebis' thigh for her approval.

None of the artists at Insight confessed to ever making a similar mistake, though one artist claimed that he had one client who wanted a tattoo of his child's name. The customer wrote down the name, had the ink done and left satisfied. However, the next day he returned after his wife yelled at him because he had misspelled his child's name.

The artists from Insight also said when inking letters, they're more concerned with the 'art' of the tattoo rather than the actual spelling of any words, so it's plausible that a transposed word could go unnoticed, unless the customer speaks up.

In fact, this is not the first time a Chicago tattoo has gained infamy. Nearly five years ago, Sam Hacker intended to tattoo the word 'CHI-TOWN' on a customer. However, after going through the appropriate steps, all which were approved by the customer, the word 'CHI-TONW' ended up being tattooed.

Hacker claimed that he was less concerned with the spelling and completely focused on the intricate art of the old-English style font the customer had requested. The tattoo actually gained so much notoriety that it became a fad for people to request the misspelled version.

This can only mean that there will be numerous sightings of upside down Blackhawk logos and backwards "Go, Cubs, Go!" tattoos scattered across the Chicagoland area in the near future.

The Tattoo and Body Art Debate

Tattoos, body piercings and other forms of body art have come under a tremendous amount of scrutiny of late. Everything from Southern teens expelled from school for a body piercing that expresses religious freedom, to employability and the strange case of a man who, running out of available skin, chose to tattoo his eyeballs.

The question really isn't about what is too much, or enough even, the only question that needs to be considered in any of this is, Why are the rights of individuals to express themselves in this way being systematically violated and removed by our current societal standards?

It amounts to censorship in one form or another, and whether you are a body art enthusiast or not, you need to be aware and concerned about these developments; because today it might be the guy or girl with the multiple tattoos and piercings who doesn't get the job, or is expelled from school, and tomorrow it might be your daughter, son, or mother with that hidden tattoo that no one else ever sees who is being discriminated against or singled out in some fashion, for their artistic expression.

Ultimately, we are all in control of our own bodies. The rights and choices of what we determine to be acceptable, wearable, and enjoyable, belongs to us, so far.

Exercise your current right to adorn your body in any way you like and visit Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI for a professionally inked custom tattoo or a beautiful body piercing in a comfortable sterile environment.

Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo and Cardi’s Furniture will Team up to Host a Blood Drive for the Rhode Island Blood Center

South Kingstown, RI ~ November 6, 2010 --- Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo, a one of a kind mobile tattoo studio based out of Portsmouth, RI, will be teaming up with Cardi’s Furniture to host a blood drive for the Rhode Island Blood Center. Jeffrey Goyette, renowned tattoo artist and owner of Inflicting Ink Tattoo Shop, created the traveling studio.

Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo will be set up in the South County Commons parking lot near Cardi’s Furniture from 9:30am until all scheduled tattoos are completed. The Rhode Island Blood Center will be on site from 10am-2pm collecting blood donations. The concept of the day will be “give blood while you wait to get tattooed”. Participants can donate blood and either set up a tattoo appointment later in the day (Jeff will decide the amount of time needed in between to ensure safety for all clients) or schedule an appointment at the shop for a later date. Those who donate blood can either have a free Inflicting Ink t-shirt or receive a $10 off coupon for their next tattoo. Individuals may schedule tattoo appointments with Jeff prior to the event, but all walk-ons are welcome.

All attendees do not have to donate blood and/or receive a tattoo. The event is to simply highlight the fact that these two elements can come together. Inflicting Ink and the Rhode Island Blood Center are looking to create awareness about tattooing and donating blood, with hopes of dispelling the myth; “you cannot give blood for a year if you have a tattoo”. This event will take place rain or shine.

Tattoo Cover-Up at Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio

Almost everyone has had a situation in their lives when they had to hide their body art for one reason or another. Hiding your tattoo isn't always easy however. Make-up can rub off and stain clothing, and many tattoos are far too dark to be effected by traditional cover-up methods anyway.

While clothing can be worn strategically to cover some tattoos, those tattoos that are located on parts of the body that would be hard to cover will still need another method. Additionally, depending upon the season, certain articles of clothing might be considered out of place merely for use as a tattoo cover-up.

If you are only interested in a temporary cover-up for your tattoo, doing some research into over the counter airbrush types of cover-up makeup can provide you with the best results. The make-up is applied using an airbrush technique that might be unusual at first, but with practice will become fairly easy.

If you are looking for a permanent tattoo cover-up you will need a consultation with a reputable tattoo artist to determine if the tattoo can be covered at all, and if so, to what degree. You will also need to go over which designs will best do the job of covering up the old ink.

Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI has highly skilled tattoo artists, working in a sterile environment, who are always happy to discuss your tattoo cover-up project with you.

Body Piercing Requires Sterile Facilities and Healthy Patrons

Best Tattoo Studio in RI Inflicting Ink's Jeff Goyette posts an article regarding sterile tattoo and body piercing facilities and the importance of being healthy before having any kind of work done.

Jeff said "Karen's Blogs are very good and I think more people should read them. This is a procedure that Inflicting Ink takes very seriously and completely checks before any piercings are granted, verbally and in writing before the client leaves the shop."

The full article from the About.com tattoo blog of Karen Hudson follows below.

UK Woman Dies 48 Hours After Tongue Piercing

Sunday October 17, 2010

According to the results of a recent inquest, the death of a UK woman, Amanda Taylor, earlier this year resulted from severe septicaemia (blood poisoning) just two days after having her tongue pierced. Health authorities checked equipment from the jewelry shop and found that although there was evidence of bacteria on some equipment due to unhealthy practices, none of the spores were connected to the death of Taylor.

What appears to have happened is that Taylor, sadly, just had bad timing and got her tongue pierced at the same time she was developing strep throat. While strep throat by itself is usually non life-threatening and easily cured with a round of antibiotics, the streptococcus bacteria is actually quite dangerous, especially if it has the opportunity to enter the blood stream. With a new piercing wound that has a quick and direct route to the bloodstream, it only took 48 hours for the bacteria to completely shut down Taylor's body. That's pretty scary and it's something that needs to be taken very seriously because this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

It's so important to make sure you're healthy before getting a tattoo or piercing, ensure that your artist follows all safety protocols, and to regard any infection or illness after the procedure to be a potentially serious problem and see a doctor immediately. And don't be afraid to go to the ER if you feel your doctor isn't taking the situation seriously enough. Taylor's doctor prescribed antibiotics for her strep throat but it was too little too late. Please take care of yourselves!

RI Tattoo Studio Applauds Court Decision Upholding First Amendment

Appeals court ends tattoo parlor ban in Calif city

By PAUL ELIAS
Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A federal appeals court struck down a city ban on tattoo parlors Thursday, ruling the artistic expression is entitled to free speech protection under the U.S. Constitution.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Southern California city of Hermosa Beach to allow tattoo parlors to operate.

The city had argued the operations threaten public health and attract an unsavory clientele prone to crime.

Several state courts and federal trial courts have upheld similar bans in other cities across the country.

However, the ruling Thursday was the first by a federal appeals court, meaning such bans are now unconstitutional in the nine western states that must comply with 9th Circuit rulings.

Circuit Judge Jay Bybee, writing for the unanimous three-judge panel, called the city's ban "substantially broader than necessary to achieve the city's significant health and safety interests and because it entirely forecloses a unique and important method of expression."

The court said the ban was an unconstitutional overreaction to health concerns that can be addressed through regulations to ensure sanitation.

Hermosa Beach City Attorney Michael Jenkins said the city was disappointed with the ruling and hasn't decided whether to appeal.

"The Hermosa Beach City Council places a priority on protecting the public's health and safety, and it adopted this ordinance because of the potential health hazards caused by unsanitary tattoo practices," Jenkins said.

Johnny Anderson sued the city in 2007 after it refused to let him move Yer Cheat'n Heart Tattoo studio from Gardena to Hermosa Beach, which is closer to his Redondo Beach home and three young children.

"They have an outdated notion that only sailors and fallen women get tattoos, which isn't the case," Anderson said of his legal battle with Hermosa Beach officials. "Everybody gets a tattoo these days."

Free speech expert Jesse Choper said it's unlikely the U.S. Supreme Court would take up the case, noting that Bybee is a politically conservative judge.

"It's a pretty straightforward case," said Choper, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley. "It would seem a clear, uncontroversial application of the First Amendment."

Inflicting Ink's Rhode Island Tattoo Studio Shop Services

Inflicting Ink offers a variety of services from different styles of tattooing to body piercing and cosmetic tattoos.

Inflicting Ink currently employs seven artists who are uniquely dedicated to tattooing as an art form that has its roots in history and early culture. They all come from diverse backgrounds and each specializes in different tattoo styles.

Styles of Tattooing

▪ Traditional or “Old School” – This style is bold, blue-black outlines, usually filled with solid red and green with rare additions of blue, yellow, brown and purple; and embellished with little or no shading (examples: Cherries, pin ups, roses, nautical stars, etc.).

▪ Contemporary or “New School” – Bold, bright and in your face style. It includes contemporary and fantastical designs. This style contains more elaborate blending and shading with extensive coloring and heavy outlines.

▪ Black and Gray – This style uses only black ink in a variety of shades. By mixing black ink with distilled water it creates a “wash” where lighter shades can be produced. This is the most popular method or tattooing.

▪ Tribal – This style is most recognizable with its dramatic use of aggressive dark lines in jagged symmetrical shapes and spread throughout the skin. These tattoos are more often done in simple black and skin tones

▪ Portraits – This style is simply the replication of a person, animal or any human realism. Most clients will bring in an actual picture so the artist can better capture the details. Portraits can be done in both color and black ink; however, many people find that black and gray is more realistic.

Inflicting Ink also provides body piercing

What is a Cosmetic Tattoo?

Cosmetic - Permanent Eyeliner, Lip liner, Lipstick, and Eyebrows

Permanent make-up is possible through a procedure called micro pigmentation, which is similar to tattooing. It can mimic eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, lip liner, and lipstick. When Inflicting Ink performs this medical procedure, permanent make-up can appear natural and attractive.

Advantages of Permanent Make-up

Permanent make-up is ideal for on-the-go women who always need to look their best but cannot afford the time to apply make-up throughout the day. At the end of the day, your make-up looks as though it was just freshened. You can select your color of make-up from a wide variety of shades, or a new shade can be created for you.

Tattoo Studio in RI and Tattoo Myths

Myths and Facts About Tattoos

It’s bad luck to get a tattoo of someone’s name… Light colors hurt more… Tattoos bleed a lot… A tattoo needle is only one needle… Tattoos turn blue when they are old… Red ink fades quickly… Anyone who can draw can tattoo… Only sailors, bikers, circus people and tough people get tattoos… Tattoos cost a lot of money… Tattoos are forever…

Many of these urban legends were started a long time ago, when basically some truth did exist in them. Everything from the types of folks who would venture into a tattoo parlor, to the kinds of skin dyes used caused the myths to become popular in the first place.

Modern tattooing however is much more about the art form, hygiene, and appealing to people from all walks of life, than about maintaining any outdated stereotypes and falsehoods. Let’s take a few of these myths about tattooing and turn them into factual statements instead.

Having someone’s name tattooed on your body, while not necessarily bad luck, is a personal choice. And while any relationship can fail, if you already believe that getting their name tattooed on you is a guarantee one way or the other about the outcome then you’re doing it for the wrong reasons anyway. Relationships fail for all kinds of reasons, getting someone’s name tattooed on you is not one of them.

Tattoos do hurt, and depending on your tolerance to pain, some will feel more pain, some less. The light colors are typically done last when the skin is most tender, so to most, these will be the most painful colors. As to other ink colors, tattoo ink innovations have come a tremendously long way. During the 50s and 60s, tattoo ink pigments were not as refined as they are today, so bright colors like red or blue would fade under the elements and normal wear. That is no longer the case however, and all tattoo colors resist fading if properly cared for when healing.

Tattoo needles are clustered together in soldered groups of odd numbers, 3, 5, 7, etc. While most tattoos bleed minimally during the outline, and up to as much as 10 minutes after the shading is done, by the time you leave the shop, the bleeding will have stopped. Your tattoo will be bandaged for hygienic reasons only.

With modern medical advances in dermatology and skin care, tattoos are no longer a forever commitment. Laser tattoo removal and fade creams can remove a tattoo leaving behind no trace.

Stereotypes for tattoos came about at a time when tattoo parlors were rare, unregulated, and often located in seedy areas. Many sailors obtained tattoos according to the myths and legends that said that tattoos and piercings were thought to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck to the wearer. The prevalence of motorcycle enthusiasts who enjoy tattoos is merely a cultural bias. Today, anyone can have a tattoo and no one would even know, and conversely simply because someone does have a tattoo, does not mean they are part of a seedy sub-culture. The prevalence of tattoos in society and among more publicly notable figures has also done a great deal to bring tattooing into its place as a mainstream form of art and personal expression.

Underground Unlicensed Tattoo Artist Charged in NH

A local newspaper article that RI tattoo artist and Inflicting Ink owner Jeff Goyette found interesting concerning unlicensed, underground illegal tattooing is posted below.

Illegal Tattoo Artist Faces New Charges

Police File New Charges Against Illicit Tattoo Artist

By Andrew Wolfe

NASHUA, NH – Police have brought additional charges against a woman accused of tattooing minors in an unlicensed, underground tattoo parlor in her apartment, detectives reported Wednesday.

Ronalda Brunner-Cummings, 45, of 1 Burns Hill Road, building 3, apt. 37, Hudson, has been jailed since her arrest late last month, unable to post $1,000 bail, Detective Lt. Jeff Bukunt said this morning.

Police charge she had been running an illicit tattoo parlor out of her former apartment at 25 Tolles St., using equipment she bought online, and offering low quality, cut-rate tattoos, at about $30 to 40 each.

Police searched her Hudson home and seized her tattooing equipment on April 29, and on Tuesday, Brunner-Cummings was arrested and arraigned in Nashua District Court on several more misdemeanor charges, Bukunt said.

In addition to endangering the welfare of two 15-year-olds, Brunner-Cummings is also charged with tattooing without a license, and tattooing minors, both also misdemeanors, Bukunt said.

Tattoo shops are highly regulated by state law (RSA 314-A), and it is illegal to operate one without a license in New Hampshire, and illegal to tattoo persons younger than 18.

“Even if parents said it was okay for their kids to get a tattoo, it’s illegal,” Bukunt said.

“Although the tattoos were of poor quality the bigger concern were the health risks,” Bukunt said. “Any time you’re dealing with needles, there’s obviously a risk (of infectious disease).”

Licensed tattoo shops are required to know and abide by safety regulations, including using disposable ink containers, tubes and needles. Brunner-Cummings has never been licensed, nor applied for a tattoo license, in New Hampshire, Bukunt said, and police have been unable to verify what sort of health protocols she followed, if any, he said.

Police have identified four teens tattooed by Brunner-Cummings, but two of the families declined to cooperate in prosecuting charges against her, Bukunt said.

Sterile Tattoo Environments and RI Tattoo Law

Jeff Goyette, the owner of Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI, and also the creator, builder and owner of the Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck, has been involved in the tattoo industry for almost all of his adult life, making him a veritable expert in this field.

In the State of Rhode Island, the last time the tattooing laws were rewritten was in 1997. Due to Jeff’s extensive knowledge in the areas of blood-born pathogens, sterile procedures, cross contamination, barrier coding, and the tattoo industry, he was asked by the State to consult with them regarding rewriting the bylaws and what needed to be contained in order to keep the public safe.

After several months of consulting with Vincent Bacari, who was in charge of the Medical Tattooing Department of the Department of Health, the new laws went into effect.

Although the laws were altered to provide a somewhat more sterile approach to tattooing, many of Jeff’s suggestions were labeled an ‘unnecessary precaution’ and were not adopted. Jeff feels that there is still too much of a gap in the procedures that the State notes as acceptable and what he considers the ultimate protective environment in which to tattoo. And though the standards are improving, he is adamant that the procedures and environment at Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio and Traveling Tattoo remain well above the State recommendations in the areas of sterilization, environment, and sterile practices.
