Mermaid Tattoos - Not Just for Sailors

Mermaid Tattoos

Mermaid tattoos have been around since the early 1300's. Although the mermaids themselves were initially thought to be the product of hallucinating sailors who had spent too long at sea, they later became synonymous with any mysterious creature who lived in the ocean.

Sailors were thought to wear mermaid tattoos to bring them luck on the open seas in the event they fell overboard and to keep them company on long voyages where women were not permitted. Myths surrounding mermaids however, claim that they are sirens who lure men to their deaths with the sound of their voices or their beauty.

In the archetypical sense, the mermaid embodies everything associated with the sea and the mythological force of rebirth and the natural world. Throughout history, in folklore, fantasy, and mythology, the mermaid has held a place as the handmaiden of Aphrodite and Venus and a symbol of the tragedy of star-crossed romance.

One of the talented artists at Inflicting Ink Tattoo will be happy to help you design your own custom mermaid tattoo...just ask!

What does your wolf tattoo mean?

Wolf Tattoos

Wolves hold a long history of symbolism associated with cultures, religions, and myths. From the association of the 'lone' wolf to the brother (and sister) hood of the pack, few animals create as much of an emotional response as the wolf.

Although the wolf is largely associated with Native Americans, it was only the hunting tribes who considered wolf a good omen. Agricultural tribes saw the wolf as a predator. Most tribes held the wolf in a position of respect as a valuable guide.

In Norse mythology we see great depictions of the wolf as Fenrir and his children Skoll and Hati. Fenrir grows too large for his bonds and devours Odin according to the myth. He is later stabbed by Odin's son. In similar Norse myths however, Odin had two wolf pets Geri and Freki who were considered good omens.

Even the Bible mentions wolves at least 13 times, and always as signs of greed and destruction, or the perils Christ's followers would face on their paths.

Perhaps the most popular stories about wolves are found in our fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. In each instance, wolf is portrayed as a trickster, or predator, who must not be trusted and must be guarded against at all costs.

Although wolf tattoos have always been quite popular, it is only with modern werewolf stories and cinematic references that the wolf has come to have a more romantic symbolism attached to it.

Tattoo Process

Tattoos have long been associated with bikers, traveling sideshows, and sailors. A new kind of diversity has permeated this culture however, and now tattoos can be found on every kind of person, in every culture, every career, and almost every home. Even those who would prefer not to have a picture type tattoo will often get cosmetic tattooing done to accent eyebrows, or line lips or eyes.

The tattoo process involves the use of a sterile needle that injects ink into the upper layer of the dermis, beneath the epidermis of the skin - or approximately 1 millimeter below the surface. The needle is typically powered electronically and punctures the skin between 50 and 3,000 times per minute. This is one of the many reasons that a sterile environment is required for tattooing.
The ink is injected into the dermis because that layer is more stable than the epidermis and will ensure that your tattoo will stay there, with minor fading only, for the rest of your life.

That is, unless you decide you'd like it removed. Ask us about tattooing and our virtually painless laser tattoo removal!
