Tattoo Healing vs. Tattoo Infection

You got a great new tattoo and now you have a list of aftercare tips for helping it to heal and look great for the rest of your life. You're following the rules and yet you still aren't sure if you're healing properly.

Here's how can you tell the difference between the normal healing of your tattoo and an infected tattoo.

During the first week of healing your new tattoo might be slightly swollen or mildly sore. Over the counter pain medication should be enough to control the discomfort. In comparison, an infection will be very swollen and red, and you will be in pain. You need to get to the doctor immediately if you experience any extreme pain or discomfort or large swelling at this point.

During the second week some flaking or peeling may occur and it might be itchy, scabbed, or dry. DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH IT. If your tattoo is growing more swollen, irritated, or painful, if you are noticing any odor, discharge, or sores, or if you have a fever, it's definitely time to get medical attention.

Finally by week three your tattoo should be well on its way to completely healed. It might be slightly sensitive, but any scabbing should be clearing up and your skin should be healing. By no means should you wait until this far into the healing process if you have any of the symptoms of an infection. A tattoo infection can be life-threatening and should be treated as a very serious medical emergency. Seek treatment right away if you suspect you have an infection.
