Process of Cosmetic Tattooing

Similar to a standard Tattoo, Cosmetic Tattooing applies permanent pigment beneath the skin via a needle. Special training and techniques are necessary to better apply cosmetic tattoos, and the skills do differ slightly to those used when applying a standard tattoo.

You will want to be sure that you work with the artist to choose the best color and communicate exactly what you want done. Once you are comfortable with the decision, the artist will sketch a light overlay with a sterile surgical pen. When the overlay is complete the artist will cover the area with a topical anesthetic gel which will numb the skin and dramatically decrease any discomfort. The tattoo artist will then use a vibrating needle to apply the desired colors into the top layer of the skin.

Care of a Cosmetic Tattoo

Once the procedure is complete you will need to keep the area lightly covered and clean. Do not be alarmed if the area gets slightly swollen, or the color looks darker than the one you chose. It can take from 3 to 4 weeks for the color to fade into its permanent shade and the swelling is the natural reaction by the skin to the tattoo needle. Gently use a cold compress and some antibiotic ointment to reduce swelling and decrease the risk of infection.

As with any tattoo complications can develop. If you notice any dramatic changes or signs of infection, obtain medical assistance immediately.
