Tattoo Removal Becoming A Growing Trend

Have you ever wanted to get rid of your tattoos? It may seem like a big commitment to go for a few sessions for laser removal, but it's less of a commitment than the actual tattoo. This article highlights the growing trend of laser tattoo removal...

It's estimated that one in five Americans have a tattoo, and that number only continues to grow. But as more and more people are getting ink done, there's a growing number looking to get them removed.

"Oh birds, people like getting tattoos of birds. Lettering has gotten really big," said Jeff Mann at Vishnu Bunny Tattoo in Sioux Falls.

After 20 years of tattooing, Mann has seen it all.

Mann said, "You see lots of fads come and go. In the 90's the tribal stuff was really big."

The one thing that remains constant, though, is the number of people walking through their doors on Phillips Avenue in Sioux Falls. Business is better than ever. Their biggest customers? Women.

"It seems like you tend to do bigger tattoos on men so as far as hours in the chair it's probably close to a tie but as far as individual people coming in for work I think it's probably 60-40 women to men," said Mann.

Vishnu does around 500 tattoos a month, but the canvas isn't always a clean slate.

"Sometime we'll have something come in that just isn't executed well, it's too light and patchy but if the foundation is in the right place you can kind of go in and fix it as what it is," said Mann.

But when nothing can be done, or it's just time for it to be gone, many are turning to laser tattoo removal.

Natasha Christensen of Sioux Falls said, "I was tired of covering them up."

Christensen got her tattoo when she was 18. That was 12 years ago. She's simply at a different place in her life.

Christensen said, "I just got it with a friend and it seemed like a good idea at the time but it's just not who I am anymore."

She got her first laser treatment in September of last year. Four treatments in, what once was a rose, is now starting to fade.

"That is actually the laser shattering the pigment, so we can tell where we've been by the graying of the pigment. And whether or not the ink is responding."
