Tattoo Collectibles?

Tattoos are commonly known as artwork and masterpieces. This photographer found a unique way of preserving these uncommon collectibles. Each tattoo is actually preserved from a Polish prison inmate and are now on display through her photographic collection. Read more about Katarzyna Mirczak's tattoo exhibition.

In late 19th-Century Poland, prison tattoos were cut from the bodies of deceased inmates and preserved to identify connections between convicts. Today, those samples are art, and 60 of them have been captured in haunting and beautiful photographs by Katarzyna Mirczak. The photographer found them at the Department of Forensic Medicine at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland and wanted to show how prisoners would use a variety of inventive -- but often dangerous -- materials to tattoo intricate designs in their skin.

New Military Rules on Tattoos

Tattoo parlors had a recent wave of soldiers through their doors. The recent change in military policies regarding visible tattoos is having a huge affect on soldiers and their future plans for new tattoos. According to the new regulations soldiers will not be permitted to get any visible tattoos that are larger than a hands length. Check out this article to learn more about the recent change and how soldiers are adjusting to it.

It`s been a long and colorful tradition, but times are changing for the Army. According to a new report, soldiers will no longer be allowed to have tattoos below their elbows and knees or above their necklines. Those Q13 FOX News spoke with say the new rules cross the line. “The military base is just right here down the street from us,” said James Tullis, of the Wicked Needle Tattoo. For tattoo shops near JBLM, military tattoos mean big business. “We get a lot of military guys coming in that have just come back from deployment or getting ready to go,” Tullis said Tuesday. And right now, business is buzzing. “They’re trying to get in before they have their pictures taken, to get them all done,” Tullis said. Soldiers say they are racing to get tattooed before the ink dries on some new restrictions for body art. “I think it’s bogus,” said veteran Marine and current Defense Department worker Adan Yescas. “Tattoo has always been a part of the culture, and I think it’s wrong.” Like many of his buddies, Yescas is still healing from this weekend “Oh, they are rushing, you know, trying to get it done fast, get grandfathered in before they (officers) catch on,” Yescas said.

Dolly Parton's Cosmetic Tattoos

Dolly Parton speaks up about her love tattoos and why she chose to cover her scars with them. Solidifying that tattoos can also be used for cosmetic purposes. The famous country singer recently opened up on the Today show about her ink work. She told the press that most of her tattoos are expressions of love for her husband of over 50 years Dean. Dolly Parton has spoken out about her body art. The 68-year-old country singer stopped by the "Today" show Tuesday and discussed the longtime rumors that she secretly has ink covering her breasts and arms, pointed out by Jezebel last week. "People said the other day that the reason you wear sleeves is that you have snake tattoos all over you, and I said, 'No, I don't,'" Parton, who is about to drop her 42nd album, "Blue Smoke," told co-host Savannah Guthrie. "I do have a few little tattoos, but they were mostly done to cover scars because I'm so fair," Parton disclosed ahead of her perfomance on Tuesday morning’s show. "So it started with that, and I'm not really one to have tattoos, but I do have a few and they're not where you can see them." Parton is married to husband Carl Thomas Dean since 1966 and added to Guthrie that most of the tats she does have are for him.

H'e'll Take a McDouble with a Side of Ink Please

Stian Ytterdahl has a permanent expression of his love for McDonald's on his left arm and he's "lovin' it". The 18 year old from Norway took the prank issued by his friends to heart and made good on their agreement. He likes the tattoo but wonders if his stance will change in the years to come. "Now I'm a living billboard," he told Romereskes Blad, according to Gawker. "But I think all this is just fun. Maybe it won't be as fun when I'm 50 or 60 years old, but it's my choice." The tattoo, which takes up most of his arm, shows a recent purchase that included a soda, cheeseburger and "nonstop Flurry." A spokeswoman from McDonald's Norway has stated that the teen is "obviously" a "loyal customer." The tattoo parlor also offered to ink the receipt they gave Ytterdahl for the first tattoo on his left arm for free, and he's agreed, according to the Irish Mirror.

Bridging the Generational Gap of Japanese Tattoos

Japanese tattooing has a whisper of taboo attached. The Japanese American culture of this generation has challenged the past perceptions of Japanese tattooing. As the younger generation continues to embrace the self expression of tattoo art, a bridge of communication is necessary to balance both worlds. An L.A. art museum has taken on the challenge and curated a Japanese Tattoo Art Show to honor and spread the history of Japanese tattooing. This article highlights the show, including an interview with the exhibit's photographer.

The show looks at Japanese tattooing and its ties to ukiuyo-e prints, as well as the practices and relationships of Japanese tattooing in the United States and Japan today. Visitors will see work by artists such as Horitaka, Horitomo, Chris Horishiki Brand, Miyazo, Shige, Junii and Yokohama Horiken. “These are artists who completely devote their lifetime to this craft, which our title is from, gaman. Perseverance is the closest definition of the word gaman, which is the idea of you constantly push and you constantly work and you constantly fight,” said Kip Fulbeck, the designer and photographer of “Perseverance.”

Jeff Goyette Bio

Jeff Goyette was born and raised in Massachusetts where tattooing was illegal, and to this day is only allowed on a per community basis, with each community deciding for themselves whether to allow it or not. Jeff still wanted to be a tattoo artist, and so learned his trade and took it on the road with the tattoo tour where he continued his tattoo education through coursework and tour experience.

In 1993 Jeff opened Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI as a way to get out of touring and establish some roots in the community. He has been in this location for 17 years. After a few years in the shop however, he wanted to use his traveling experience to be able to bring tattooing to people who might not have the chance to get to a brick-and-mortar shop.

So he built the Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck, over 73 feet of truck housing a state of the art, sterile, mobile tattoo facility ~ there is nothing else like it on the planet, literally, as the Guiness Book of World Records has named it the largest tattoo facility in the world, but simply has no category to place it in.

The truck travels to fairs, events, concerts, and even does private parties, drawing large crowds and those who do not have access to a local tattoo studio for their body art. Jeff loves when he can give back to a community, and often simply brings the truck to draw in numbers at charity events whenever possible, whether any tattooing will be done or not.

He and his artists model their work on the belief that a customer should always feel that they have received a quality piece of art, that the work is consistent, and that they can be proud of their tattoo as well as where it came from.
