What Every Tattoo Artist Wishes You Knew

Thinking About a Tattoo?

Before you go to any tattoo shop, there are a few things that you should consider to make the experience enjoyable for you, the other patrons, and the artist. All artists will want to hear your opinion, and want you to express your ideas, but some folks can get carried away. Tattoo artists are all highly trained in their field, and usually very passionate about their art. Like most artists, they tend to bruise easily, so tread lightly with your criticism, and Be Nice. That being said, here are a few things that they would like you to know (and remember) before you step into their shop.

Do not show up drunk for your tattoo.

Aside from the obvious health and sanitation issues, it's obnoxious. If you're not sober, most studios won't even let you get the tattoo. The Board of Health is rather particular about that, and no artist wants to work on a drunk.

Have some idea of what you want done.

You don't need to show up with a drawing, in fact most artists won't use someone else's work, but you do have to have some idea of the kind of tattoo you want, including size and placement. Tattoo artists are experts at this and are used to looking at tattoos on the human body, so if an artist gives you a tip that a certain piece won't look good where you want it, or that the size is off, trust them and take their advice. Your input is valuable too however, so don't ever let an artist bully you into something you don't want. You will be living with it for the rest of your life (unless you want some laser tattoo removal  next).

Don't be cheap.

When you're shopping around for an artist, price should be the last thing on your mind. Just as you wouldn't go to a backwoods, bargain-basement for a medical procedure, you need to remember that a tattoo is a sterile procedure done by a professional in a sterile environment (a good tattoo is at least). If you're looking for a bargain in this area, keep in mind that you'll get what you pay for.

Inflicting Ink Tattoo in Portsmouth RI offers custom tattooing by licensed professional tattoo artists in a sterile, comfortable environment, as well as laser tattoo removal by fully trained technicians. Contact them now for an appointment, or feel free to walk in during regular business hours.

3 Things You Need to Know Before You Get a Tattoo

Tattoo lovers come in all shapes and sizes. Like all forms of art, what one person finds perfect, another may see as unbearable. There are some aspects of getting a tattoo that are universal however, and that should be sought after and understood by anyone seeking some ink.

Quality of the Studio Matters

We've all heard horror stories about people getting bad tattoos, backyard tattoo parties, biker tattoo parties, and basically any unsanitary, non-sterile situation where people have gotten tattooed. Most of these situations involve alcohol as well; which when combined with the non-sterile environment places them at the top of the "Don't Do" list for getting a tattoo. While getting a tattoo in less-than-optimum environment won't absolutely guarantee you get a bad tattoo or heaven forbid, a serious infection, it would simply be wiser to opt-out of these kinds of situations entirely and visit a reputable, licensed, sterile tattoo facility instead.

Bring Your Own Artwork or Idea

Yes, tattoo studios have books and books of artwork already available for you, but do you really want something that potentially hundreds, even thousands of people are already wearing? Isn't the purpose of getting the tattoo to mark something special about your life? You don't need a professional or to pay someone to draw you something, but have a good idea of what you want, be able to describe it, or have a picture handy to give the artist something to go on. A good tattoo artists will be able to help you refine your artwork before they ink you anyway. Remember also that tattoos look larger on paper. Once they're applied to your skin the perspective will change a bit so choose something slightly larger than you would normally to compensate.

All Tattoos Can Be Removed

The days of people using salt or creams are reaching an end. Unless you'd simply like to cover your tattoo temporarily, there is no reason for you to put-off laser tattoo removal for unwanted body art. The prices are affordable, the new Quanta Q-Plus Lasers take out every spectrum of ink, and professional tattoo studios typically offer skin cooling procedures to keep the pain under control.

Whether you need to free up some space for a new tattoo, or are simply looking to get rid of an old one, laser tattoo removal is the best option available.

Cosmetic Tattooing vs. Custom Tattooing

There are many options to consider when getting a tattoo. For most people, this merely involves the choice of what to get and where to get it. While for others, the decision isn't so much a question of what they'd like to have done, but what they should call it when looking for someone to help them.

In the world of tattoos there are different kinds of tattoos, as well as different uses for tattoos. For instance, there are tattoos that will help accident and scarred victims eliminate or minimize their scarring. These are in the family of medical tattoos. There are tattoos that will enhance your appearance in very subtle, permanent ways. These fall under the category of cosmetic tattoos. Then there are tattoos that are designed with you and your tattoo artist for a specific part of your body. These are called custom tattoos.

Medical tattooing is often done by specialized medical professionals in hospital environments. When talking about most tattoo studios, including Inflicting Ink, cosmetic and custom tattooing are the two categories from above that are most requested.

A cosmetic tattoo might be anything from eyebrow shading or eyeliner, to lip liner and beauty mark enhancement. Inflicting Ink employs professionally trained tattoo artists who are highly skilled in the art of cosmetic tattooing.

A custom tattoo may be something small and easily drawn, planned, and applied, or it can be something large and involved that will take many sessions to complete. Whatever custom tattoo you have in mind, the accomplished tattoo artists at Inflicting Ink Tattoo will be able to help.

Types of Cosmetic Tattooing

The tattoo industry has evolved substantially over the past 20 years, particularly in the areas of offering body modifications and laser tattoo removal services. Where a tattoo used to be a permanent addition to your body, it can now be completely removed. Where tattoos used to be primarily for men (stereotypically sailors of course), and used to be for the purpose of body art adornment alone, we are now able to have Cosmetic Tattooing done in areas such as eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner.

Eyebrow Cosmetic Tattoo

People interested in maintaining a certain, well-kept appearance pay close attention to the shape and color of their eyebrows. The eyebrows frame the eyes, so having a well-plucked pair can greatly increase attention to the eye area. Some people have extremely thin eyebrows that they are either born with or achieve through over-plucking or an accident of some kind. Still others may have areas within the eyebrow where hair does not grow. One method of dealing with thin or patchy eyebrows is Cosmetic Tattooing.

Lips

"Lipstick Bleed" is a term used by many women to describe the nuisance of lipstick smears that extend beyond the natural lip line. For those who would rather not deal with lipstick every day or simply want to add a certain shade or color, a cosmetic lip-liner tattoo may be the answer.

Post Surgery

Cosmetic Tattooing can benefit and enhance the appearance of a nipple after breast-reconstruction, reduce the appearance of certain scars from surgery, and improve other permanent surgical inconsistencies.

Communicate

Before deciding to get a cosmetic tattoo there are certain considerations and precautions that need to be taken. The first is knowing exactly what you want, and understanding that not all procedures are reversible. The second is checking your tattoo artist's credentials and the cleanliness of their shop. Read reviews, ask to speak with former clients, inspect the facility where the procedure will be done to ensure a clean, sterile, and safe environment.

Why do people get tattoos?

Inked: Fox's Watters Takes On Tattoo Nation

Factor' producer Jesse Watters ventures to Coney Island in order to find out why people get tattoos. Watters also questions the tattoo nation on politics and who they support in the upcoming election.

O'REILLY: "Back of the Book" segment tonight, "Watters World," it's estimated 15 percent of Americans have tattoos, and that number rises to 40 percent in the age group 26 to 40.

Now, there is not a social stigma that there used to be among the tattooed people, but they can still be a breed apart, as Jesse Watters found out.

Getting Rid of Your Butt Tattoo Has Never Been Easier!

'America's Worst Tattoos': Man Has His Parents' Faces Tattooed On His Buttocks

On the Series Premiere of "America’s Worst Tattoos" (Thu., 10 p.m. ET on TLC) viewers were introduced to John.

He loves his parents so much that he decided to have portraits of them tattooed onto his body. On his buttocks, to be precise. Ouch!

"For Mother’s Day, I decided to get my mom's face tattooed on my butt cheek," said John, showing off his mom's face on his posterior. "My mom cried when she first saw it."

Next, "I got my dad’s face tattooed on my ass. ... My dad, who is the king of not showing emotion, sent me a text message that said, 'You rock!'"

Military Tattoo or Military Tattoos?

If you would like to get a military tattoo and are stationed in the Rhode Island area, visit Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth. We gladly take walk-ins and appointments and offer state of the art sterile facilities for both tattooing and laser tattoo removal.

2 Tattoos or not 2 Tattoos?

by Star

Two Tattoos? Let’s ponder that question. And no, I don’t mean the question of whether or not a second tattoo is needed. What I want to lay out for you is why “tattoo” is in our book twice.

Does tattoo have two meanings? Yes. It does.

One you probably knew (and the other one):

tattoo #78: Military tattoos–the skin art kind to mark with an indelible design by inserting pigment into punctures in the skin or a design made in such a way

tattoo #730: Tattoo–a thrill to experience a military display consisting of music, marching, and exercises or an evening drum or bugle signal recalling soldiers to their quarters

(Concise Oxford English Dictionary © 2008 Oxford University Press)

If you’re like me, maybe you’ve seen and enjoyed a festival that included fife and drum corps, the sound of bagpipes and bugles, and people in “very military” looking uniforms. You just didn’t know that may have been a “tattoo.”

Next to the Fourth of July’s fireworks and patriotic music and parades, these types of events hold a special place in my heart. That feeling only grew fonder when I later found out that these “very military” looking uniformed performers were borne of military tradition and history. I was just slow to realize.

The term “tattoo” dates from the seventeenth century’s British Army days. Drummers from the garrison were sent out into the towns at 2130—that’s #770 or Military time for 9:30pm—each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was known as “doe den tap toe” and encouraged the innkeepers to turn off the taps, stop serving beer, and send the soldiers home for the night.

I can’t help but wonder if soldiers were not only being called from the inns but out of the “tattoo parlors” as well.

According to PBS, tattoos for early-American military members were a tradition started in 1846 by Martin Hildebrandt who set up a permanent tattoo shop in New York City and began tattooing sailors and military servicemen from both sides of the Civil War. I can easily imagine them fresh from the fields of war celebrating the latest successful battle or memorializing their fallen brothers forever marked on their hearts and skin.

Tattoo Artist Gives Confidence to Breast Cancer Patients

Inflicting Ink is an avid supporter of breast cancer fundraising and research efforts whenever possible. And while we do not do surgical tattoos, we do offer beautiful cosmetic tattoos and laser tattoo removal.

Tattoo artist helps women regain confidence after breast surgery with her artwork

By Kate Elizabeth Queram

After 16 years as a tattoo artist, Sarah Peacock has an extensive portfolio of the art she's immortalized on people's skin.

But some of her most meaningful works aren't found among the pages of portraits in her collection. They can be seen only on the chests of breast cancer survivors.

For about three years, Peacock, co-owner of Artfuel Inc. tattoo parlor in Wilmington, has been tattooing nipples for survivors who have undergone breast-reconstruction surgery.

Sometimes, her customers have had their nipples reconstructed by a plastic surgeon; other times, she's tattooing directly on the breast itself. In both cases, Peacock uses around nine shades of ink to realistically shade and tint the flesh to perfectly mirror what each woman's nipples looked like prior to her mastectomy.

"I tattoo tonally," said Peacock, who works from the "before" photos taken by her customers' plastic surgeons. "I use as many colors as it takes."

Nipple reconstruction is the final step in the breast-rebuilding process, meaning that for Peacock's customers, the trip to the tattoo parlor is the last phase of a long and painful cosmetic process.
But the result, they say, is worth it.

"Before I had the nipples done, it was literally two mounds sitting there and it did not look normal. It did not look real," said Susie Cox-Parker, 47, tattooed by Peacock after her double mastectomy in 2008. "I was like, ‘No, I'm too young, I'm not supposed to look like this, and I want to be as real and normal-looking as possible.'

"It made a big difference to me."

Cosmetic Tattoos

Permanent make-up can either be one of the best treats you give to yourself, or an experience that leaves you wishing you never did it.

There are several important conditions and criteria to consider when making the decision to have cosmetic tattooing done anywhere on your body.

Cosmetic tattoos differ from artistic tattoos in that they are predominantly used by women for the purpose of simplifying their beauty routine, or in the case of accident victims, attempting to redefine their lips and brows or cover and blend scarring.

Some of the most important questions you need to ask before you decide where to get your tattoo work done concern the studio's reputation and sterile practices. This one question alone will give you enough information to decide if the shop is right for you. Basically, you want to make sure that the tattoo shop is licensed, that all the artists are licensed, and that they use sterile practices to prevent cross-contamination from blood-born pathogens and other related germs.

Because many viruses can live on unsterilized surfaces for time periods ranging from hours to days, it is extremely important that not only the equipment is sterilized using an autoclave, but the surfaces, chairs, and surrounding areas are cleaned before and after each client with sterilizing cleaners.

The second criteria to consider, is the skill of the artist who will do your tattoo work. Unlike artistic tattoos, where there is even small room for minor mistakes to be integrated into the artwork as though they don't exist, having cosmetic tattooing done offers no such protections. If the artist makes a mistake, it will be something you will have to live with, and that you will very likely not be able to cover-up or eliminate them unless you then have tattoo removal performed on the affected area.
