Types of Cosmetic Tattooing

The tattoo industry has evolved substantially over the past 20 years, particularly in the areas of offering body modifications and laser tattoo removal services. Where a tattoo used to be a permanent addition to your body, it can now be completely removed. Where tattoos used to be primarily for men (stereotypically sailors of course), and used to be for the purpose of body art adornment alone, we are now able to have Cosmetic Tattooing done in areas such as eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner.

Eyebrow Cosmetic Tattoo

People interested in maintaining a certain, well-kept appearance pay close attention to the shape and color of their eyebrows. The eyebrows frame the eyes, so having a well-plucked pair can greatly increase attention to the eye area. Some people have extremely thin eyebrows that they are either born with or achieve through over-plucking or an accident of some kind. Still others may have areas within the eyebrow where hair does not grow. One method of dealing with thin or patchy eyebrows is Cosmetic Tattooing.

Lips

"Lipstick Bleed" is a term used by many women to describe the nuisance of lipstick smears that extend beyond the natural lip line. For those who would rather not deal with lipstick every day or simply want to add a certain shade or color, a cosmetic lip-liner tattoo may be the answer.

Post Surgery

Cosmetic Tattooing can benefit and enhance the appearance of a nipple after breast-reconstruction, reduce the appearance of certain scars from surgery, and improve other permanent surgical inconsistencies.

Communicate

Before deciding to get a cosmetic tattoo there are certain considerations and precautions that need to be taken. The first is knowing exactly what you want, and understanding that not all procedures are reversible. The second is checking your tattoo artist's credentials and the cleanliness of their shop. Read reviews, ask to speak with former clients, inspect the facility where the procedure will be done to ensure a clean, sterile, and safe environment.

If you would like a free consultation to discuss Cosmetic Tattooing, Body Piercing, a Custom Tattoo, or Laser Tattoo Removal, contact Inflicting Ink today at (401) 683-5680 for more information.

Are People Still Fired Over Tattoos?

Apparently this Mansfield, Ohio woman says she was.

Mansfield Woman Claims She Was Fired For Tattoo

October 24, 2011
MANSFIELD, Ohio - Abby Carper of Mansfield said she was fired for her body art.

Carper, a home health care worker, said he was terminated because of her tattoos, even though she had them when she was hired.

She has tattoos on her arm, her shoulder, her back and she still plans to get more. They include a fairy, a dragon, and her children's names.

Carper said when she was hired a few months ago by Care Companions of Ohio, her tattoos were not an issue.

"Most elderly men I take care of are veterans and I've seen naked ladies on their arms, bulldogs for Marines, anchors. You name it, I've seen it," said Carper.

Then two weeks ago, the 31-year-old Mansfield mother of five said she was told her body art didn't belong in her line of work.

Carper's mother told ONN's Denise Alex that it should be the quality of the care, not the tattoos, that matters.

ONN-TV tried contacting Care Companions of Ohio, but they not yet responded.

Carper said she plans to filed a complaint with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission alleging discrimination.

Carper is now working as a home health aid at another Mansfield company.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates more than 45 million Americans have at least one tattoo.

Scratchers Give Tattoo Artists a Bad Name

The article below deals with the unfortunate popularity of underground tattooing, unlicensed tattoo artists, and non-sterile environments. If you are planning to get a tattoo, no matter where you go, please make sure that the artist is licensed, and the facility is sterile – if not for yourself, at least consider that every unlicensed artist who is tattooing you, is also tattooing underage children. In addition, you’re putting your life on the line, literally, and risking exposure to some of the nastiest skin diseases and infections on the planet, not to mention HIV and other blood born viruses.

Think before you ink!

The one place you should never go to get a tattoo

By Dan Wells
OXFORD, OH (FOX19) -
They're part-time tattooing wannabes called "Scratchers." It's a group of people who have taught
themselves the art of "permanent ink." It's growing in popularity and leaving people right here
in the Tri-state with more than just a design on their body.

From the beginning, Steve Cupp - the owner of Vertigo Tattoo in Oxford - has been outspoken
about safe tattooing practices. He's been creating body art since 1997, but what he's seen grow
in popularity lately is just plain shocking.

"You know they will come in with holes in them, puss and all kinds of stuff and they end up
hospitalized," said Cupp.

Steve's talking about the aftermath of "scratching."

"As a general rule we'll get five or six clients a week or so they will come through the door
with something God awful," said Cupp. "As it grows people think they want to be a part of it and
they'll get on the Internet and find a machine and find some needles and with absolutely no
training what so ever start trying to tattoo their friends."

This may sound harmless enough in itself, but Scratchers have been coming under serious attack
by real tattoo artists because the un-trained practice could be deadly.

"There are tons of infections you can get - Hepatitis A, B and C, there's Staph infection there
is MRSA," said Cupp.

Scratchers usually teach themselves how to ink with the help of videos and homemade tattooing
equipment, then those Scratchers put their services out there for un-knowing takers.

Alex Cooper became a victim at 16.

"I talked to one of my friends who I went to school with and he got a tattoo from a guy in a
house and I didn't know the dangers of it so I got one," said Cooper. "Saran wrap on the kitchen
table, no kind of clean substance, basically dry wiping."

"You could be Picasso with a tattoo machine but what your doing is not right," said Doug Paxton,
a professional tattoo artist. "It's always been and up and down phenomenon that it will be a fad
for a couple of years then it goes up and down its always been that way but these other reason
is it's a fast and easy way to make money."

Doug Paxton told us this type of tattooing could literally be the death of a customer if proper
health procedures aren't strictly carried out.

"It's nasty and if it's not taken care of properly, you're going to the hospital or worse," adds
Paxton.

So how popular is a tattoo? The Pew Research Center in January of 2007 said 36 percent of 18-25
year olds have at least one tattoo.

"I feel like I was extremely lucky to not have any of that happen like the mesa or any kind of
staph infection…really," said Cooper.

Professionals say if you're thinking about getting a tattoo make sure the artist follows strict
health and safety precautions with sterilization techniques monitored by health officials. They
say if a studio is run by a professional you're going to see equipment packaged in a protective
pouches that remain sealed until it is opened in front of a customer.

Local health departments regulate tattoo studios in many jurisdictions, which should give the
person getting a tattoo some piece of mind about health risks but you want to do your homework.
Make sure you ask a lot of questions before you decide to let someone put that tattoo design on
your body.

Here are some of the question you should ask.

What are the laws in your city/state on tattooing?

What certifications and/or licenses are required to tattoo legally in your city/state?

What is the procedure of operating an autoclave? what temperature must the autoclave reach
and for how long?

What is a blood-born pathogen and how do you prevent the spread of it, and cross-
contamination?

How do you thoroughly clean and disinfect needles and tubes before autoclaving?

What layer of epidermis of the skin must you not enter to prevent scarring of a tattoo?

What is plasma, and what does the leakage of plasma during a tattoo indicate?

These are only a few of the things that are absolutely necessary for a tattoo artist to know,
and if you can't answer all of these questions with concise understanding, you are not ready to
be a tattoo artist.

Body Piercing is Safe in a Sterile Environment

Along with more information and control over sterile tattoo environments, comes a greater concern over sterile body piercing environments. Body piercing is not the same thing as having your ears pierced at the mall, although some practitioners would like you to believe that it's just as safe to get pierced in the same environment.

Body piercing environments must be completely sterile to avoid any and all risks of infection at the site of the piercing. Because certain areas of the body, are already prone to infection after piercing, this practice becomes extremely important for the health and well being of all tattoo and piercing clientele.

With greater regulation of tattoo shops across the globe, and in particular in the United States, where sterile practices have been the norm for some time, authorities are beginning to take notice and enforce regulations more stringently. And while there are many shops operating within and above the Department of Health's Sterile Practice Guidelines, there is still great room for improving the enforcement of the sterile practice regulations in many body piercing establishments.

Of greatest concern for those getting body piercings and the medical community at large, is infection at the piercing site. If left untreated, and depending upon where on the body the piercing is located, infections can turn into very serious medical conditions.

If you are contemplating a body piercing, you owe it to yourself to do a some research on the local tattoo and body piercing shops in your area and make sure that their employees use sterile practices at all times, that they are certified by the Department of Health, that all of their licenses and certifications are up to date both for the studio and the artists, that you are over 18 years of age, and that you have considered the aftercare requirements, the cost, and every other imaginable factor before getting your body pierced. And if you believe your piercing is infected, seek medical attention immediately.

Can I Get Tattooed and Pierced at the Same Time?

You can, but why would you want to? Unless you are in a particular hurry, and have the time to devote to focusing on your healing process, you may want to choose one before the other. Other than the fact that some artists will refuse to do both at the same time, here are some other reasons why getting one before the other is preferable.

Tattoos and piercings require attention to avoid infection.

Body Piercings require an extra amount of attention to heal properly, and depending upon where the piercing is, infection chances could be substantially increased. For instance, nipple piercings are more likely to become infected than piercings anywhere else on the body, including intimate piercings. The reason for this is that the piercing has a direct communication with the ducts in he breast through the nipple. This communication becomes confused, and can cause an abscess in the breast tissue that require medical attention. If you have a nipple piercing and have any signs of infection, even minor ones, make sure you seek medical attention immediately.

Tattoos and Piercings are painful to get, and can be painful to heal.

Although most tattoo enthusiasts are fairly immune to the pain of tattoos, certainly combinations of tattoos and piercings can produce more pain than just a standard tattoo alone. And if you are planning to place your tattoo in the same vicinity of your piercing, you're just inviting trouble. The extra inflammation will increase your chances of infection, and the resulting pain will mean a longer heal time overall.

Cost.

Of course you realize when getting a tattoo to begin with that it will cost a little money. If you're planning to go the bargain route at all, think again, as using a less than reputable shop, or worse a cheaper unlicensed artist, can net you some pretty serious skin diseases, and not just the kind that leave a scar, we're talking the really nasty type that can prove fatal. Spend the extra money for a reputable licensed tattoo artist in a quality sterile tattoo studio, just do one at a time to avoid breaking the bank for both the tattoo and piercing all at once.

And the one reason why getting them together seems like a better idea to most people, though really not a great reason anyway, is saving time. Realistically, since you're looking at a longer heal time for the piercing overall, you'll balance out getting your tattoo and piercing separately time-wise in the long run, and your body will thank you for treating it kindly as well.

Body Piercing Remorse

Where do the holes go?

Far from being regretful, our lives and circumstances, likes and dislikes, can and do change as we grow and mature. Anyone in the business of tattoo removal can attest that even among the most hardcore fans, there can be moments and situations that arise where removal is not only an option but a necessity.

The rise of body piercing among the youth of the country gives credence to speculation of just how the next generation sees themselves when it comes to wearing a nose or chin piercing at 40 or 50 while simultaneously bouncing a child, or grandchild, on their knee. Without giving rise to the stereotype and stigma, there is a certain degree of change that accompanies the birth of a child.

Body piercings and tattoos seem to be at the forefront of these alterations, at least from a physical perspective. When even a celebrity factor comes into focus on the matter, like the recent admission by Christina Aguilera that she has abandoned most of her prolific body piercings since the birth of her son Max, one would suppose that a changing trend was being observed rather than mere maternal instincts for presenting our children with the best examples of a life well lived.

Unlike laser tattoo removal where the technology now exists to remove virtually all of a tattoo as well as the resultant scarring in less time and for less money than ever before, there is no procedure for 'removing' body piercings; the hole will either close, or it will not. If it does not, is the bearer then left with not only a visible reminder of days gone by, but also an invited fascination from others more compelling than the jewelry ever was? Or will these 'holes' simply become known as the remnants of choices made in our youth that no longer serve us, and for which we have no way to fill, now that the glitz and glamour is gone?

In Aguilera's case it is the former, with the admirer being the very person for whom she felt compelled to remove the jewelry to begin with; her son Max. The hole has become a fascination for him, leaving his mother more concerned than ever about the day when she will have to divulge where more similar points could be found on her body, and field the discussion about whether he will want to pierce his own, starting the cycle anew.

The Tattoo and Body Art Debate

Tattoos, body piercings and other forms of body art have come under a tremendous amount of scrutiny of late. Everything from Southern teens expelled from school for a body piercing that expresses religious freedom, to employability and the strange case of a man who, running out of available skin, chose to tattoo his eyeballs.

The question really isn't about what is too much, or enough even, the only question that needs to be considered in any of this is, Why are the rights of individuals to express themselves in this way being systematically violated and removed by our current societal standards?

It amounts to censorship in one form or another, and whether you are a body art enthusiast or not, you need to be aware and concerned about these developments; because today it might be the guy or girl with the multiple tattoos and piercings who doesn't get the job, or is expelled from school, and tomorrow it might be your daughter, son, or mother with that hidden tattoo that no one else ever sees who is being discriminated against or singled out in some fashion, for their artistic expression.

Ultimately, we are all in control of our own bodies. The rights and choices of what we determine to be acceptable, wearable, and enjoyable, belongs to us, so far.

Exercise your current right to adorn your body in any way you like and visit Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI for a professionally inked custom tattoo or a beautiful body piercing in a comfortable sterile environment.

Body Piercing Requires Sterile Facilities and Healthy Patrons

Best Tattoo Studio in RI Inflicting Ink's Jeff Goyette posts an article regarding sterile tattoo and body piercing facilities and the importance of being healthy before having any kind of work done.

Jeff said "Karen's Blogs are very good and I think more people should read them. This is a procedure that Inflicting Ink takes very seriously and completely checks before any piercings are granted, verbally and in writing before the client leaves the shop."

The full article from the About.com tattoo blog of Karen Hudson follows below.

UK Woman Dies 48 Hours After Tongue Piercing

Sunday October 17, 2010

According to the results of a recent inquest, the death of a UK woman, Amanda Taylor, earlier this year resulted from severe septicaemia (blood poisoning) just two days after having her tongue pierced. Health authorities checked equipment from the jewelry shop and found that although there was evidence of bacteria on some equipment due to unhealthy practices, none of the spores were connected to the death of Taylor.

What appears to have happened is that Taylor, sadly, just had bad timing and got her tongue pierced at the same time she was developing strep throat. While strep throat by itself is usually non life-threatening and easily cured with a round of antibiotics, the streptococcus bacteria is actually quite dangerous, especially if it has the opportunity to enter the blood stream. With a new piercing wound that has a quick and direct route to the bloodstream, it only took 48 hours for the bacteria to completely shut down Taylor's body. That's pretty scary and it's something that needs to be taken very seriously because this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

It's so important to make sure you're healthy before getting a tattoo or piercing, ensure that your artist follows all safety protocols, and to regard any infection or illness after the procedure to be a potentially serious problem and see a doctor immediately. And don't be afraid to go to the ER if you feel your doctor isn't taking the situation seriously enough. Taylor's doctor prescribed antibiotics for her strep throat but it was too little too late. Please take care of yourselves!

RI Tattoo Studio Applauds Court Decision Upholding First Amendment

Appeals court ends tattoo parlor ban in Calif city

By PAUL ELIAS
Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A federal appeals court struck down a city ban on tattoo parlors Thursday, ruling the artistic expression is entitled to free speech protection under the U.S. Constitution.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Southern California city of Hermosa Beach to allow tattoo parlors to operate.

The city had argued the operations threaten public health and attract an unsavory clientele prone to crime.

Several state courts and federal trial courts have upheld similar bans in other cities across the country.

However, the ruling Thursday was the first by a federal appeals court, meaning such bans are now unconstitutional in the nine western states that must comply with 9th Circuit rulings.

Circuit Judge Jay Bybee, writing for the unanimous three-judge panel, called the city's ban "substantially broader than necessary to achieve the city's significant health and safety interests and because it entirely forecloses a unique and important method of expression."

The court said the ban was an unconstitutional overreaction to health concerns that can be addressed through regulations to ensure sanitation.

Hermosa Beach City Attorney Michael Jenkins said the city was disappointed with the ruling and hasn't decided whether to appeal.

"The Hermosa Beach City Council places a priority on protecting the public's health and safety, and it adopted this ordinance because of the potential health hazards caused by unsanitary tattoo practices," Jenkins said.

Johnny Anderson sued the city in 2007 after it refused to let him move Yer Cheat'n Heart Tattoo studio from Gardena to Hermosa Beach, which is closer to his Redondo Beach home and three young children.

"They have an outdated notion that only sailors and fallen women get tattoos, which isn't the case," Anderson said of his legal battle with Hermosa Beach officials. "Everybody gets a tattoo these days."

Free speech expert Jesse Choper said it's unlikely the U.S. Supreme Court would take up the case, noting that Bybee is a politically conservative judge.

"It's a pretty straightforward case," said Choper, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley. "It would seem a clear, uncontroversial application of the First Amendment."

Inflicting Ink's Rhode Island Tattoo Studio Shop Services

Inflicting Ink offers a variety of services from different styles of tattooing to body piercing and cosmetic tattoos.

Inflicting Ink currently employs seven artists who are uniquely dedicated to tattooing as an art form that has its roots in history and early culture. They all come from diverse backgrounds and each specializes in different tattoo styles.

Styles of Tattooing

▪ Traditional or “Old School” – This style is bold, blue-black outlines, usually filled with solid red and green with rare additions of blue, yellow, brown and purple; and embellished with little or no shading (examples: Cherries, pin ups, roses, nautical stars, etc.).

▪ Contemporary or “New School” – Bold, bright and in your face style. It includes contemporary and fantastical designs. This style contains more elaborate blending and shading with extensive coloring and heavy outlines.

▪ Black and Gray – This style uses only black ink in a variety of shades. By mixing black ink with distilled water it creates a “wash” where lighter shades can be produced. This is the most popular method or tattooing.

▪ Tribal – This style is most recognizable with its dramatic use of aggressive dark lines in jagged symmetrical shapes and spread throughout the skin. These tattoos are more often done in simple black and skin tones

▪ Portraits – This style is simply the replication of a person, animal or any human realism. Most clients will bring in an actual picture so the artist can better capture the details. Portraits can be done in both color and black ink; however, many people find that black and gray is more realistic.

Inflicting Ink also provides body piercing

What is a Cosmetic Tattoo?

Cosmetic - Permanent Eyeliner, Lip liner, Lipstick, and Eyebrows

Permanent make-up is possible through a procedure called micro pigmentation, which is similar to tattooing. It can mimic eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, lip liner, and lipstick. When Inflicting Ink performs this medical procedure, permanent make-up can appear natural and attractive.

Advantages of Permanent Make-up

Permanent make-up is ideal for on-the-go women who always need to look their best but cannot afford the time to apply make-up throughout the day. At the end of the day, your make-up looks as though it was just freshened. You can select your color of make-up from a wide variety of shades, or a new shade can be created for you.

We love to do unusual tattoos. All of the tattoo artists at Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio are highly skilled artists in their own right as well.

David,
The portrait you did of my son is fantastic. everyone who's seen it thinks it's awesome. I am so happy with it. Great job, thanks.
