What qualifications should I look for in a laser tattoo removal technician?

'This whole house was transformed;' Former white supremacist sheds hate to help all people

RIVES TOWNSHIP — Two years ago, he led a white pride march from Loomis Park to downtown Jackson.
Six months ago, he abandoned the white supremacy movement.
On April 15, he was baptized.
Five days later, Chris Simpson sat in the waiting room of a skin and vein clinic, waiting to start the long and painful process of having his tattoos, most replete with Nazi or white pride iconography, removed.
"Hate will blind you to so many things. It will stop you from having so many things," Simpson said. "It consumes you."
Simpson, a 38-year-old garbage man and former Marine, has given up on hate. It is a decision he made for his family, for his wife Misty and his children, 9-year-old Cody, 7-year-old Kayleigh, 5-year-old Nikolaus and the 2-year-old twins, Tyrsson and Aeric. It is a change that has left Simpson feeling better these past six months than he has in the last 12 years.
"He's just a lot happier," said Simpson's wife, Misty. "Happier all the time, when we're out; when we're at home; especially when we're helping people."
"WE DIDN'T PREACH HATE"
The March 21, 2010, white pride march from Loomis Park to E. Michigan Avenue perplexed, angered and offended many.
"This type of ignorance has no place here," read the sign of one protestor at Loomis Park.
Simpson led the march. Nine supports followed him. More than 100 protesters followed them. Simpson said protesters spit at him, threatened him and called him a racist, a bigot, a honkie, a cracker.
"We did what all the other races did. We tried to have a march that said we are proud to be white," Simpson said, recalling the march.
Even without the tattoos, which sprawl down his arms and up his neck, Simpson's presence can be intimidating. At 6 feet and 245 pounds, he fills out clothing with authority. He does not think his tattoos draw notice, but they are hard to miss.
"PURE HATE," is tattooed across his knuckles. His forearms read "BLOOD" and "HONOR." There are four battle axes in the shape of a swastika on his left shoulder with the words "Supreme White Power" over them. There are several wolf's hooks, a Nazi symbol. The iconic lightning bolts associated with Nazi Germany's Schutzstaffel, the SS, are above his right wrist. There's a Nazi war bird on his chest. There are tattoos of a Valkyrie, a Viking, and Thor with swastikas drawn in his helmet. Some of Simpson's tattoos are specific to the white supremacy movement, some to his former devotion to Norse mythology. Some are for his family. Some are "very stupid," he said. Some, like a sun and wizard, are meaningless. Some, like his Marine Corps tattoo and one in memory of his daughter, have deep meaning. There are 42 tattoos, he thinks. An explanation of them all takes several minutes.
Simpson was a member of Battalion 14, a white pride group with supporters in Michigan. The group had a zero tolerance policy on drugs and violence. It did not allow any illegal behavior, Simpson said. The group sought to help white people, donating baskets of formula and supplies to mothers of newborn babies and helping children on dialysis. Battalion 14 bought Christmas gifts for needy families. In their 12 years with various white pride groups, Chris and Misty Simpson estimate they donated more than $15,000.
"All to help people," Simpson said. "We didn't preach hate. ...For us, it was just about taking care of our own."

Laser Tattoo Removal

In the past

It wasn't long ago that your only options when dealing with unwanted tattoos involved pain, and lots of it. One very old method of tattoo removal is called dermabrasion. Tattoo Removal technology

Laser Tattoo Removal generally refers to using what they call Q-switched lasers to remove pigment from the skin. These lasers allow for a much less invasive, and more effective removal process.  The technology for laser tattoo removal began developing in the early 1960s with limited success. By the late 1990s however, the technology finally began to mature. A tattoo consists of several thousand particles of pigment beneath the skin. Normally, your body will reject and remove foreign particles, but in the case of tattoo ink, the particles are too large to be removed. Laser tattoo removal systems heat up the particles so that they are forced to fragment into smaller pieces, allowing your body to eliminate them on its own.

What to expect

The sensation of having a tattoo removed by laser is not considered to be any more painful than getting a tattoo. Having the procedure done consists of a series of treatments and it may take anywhere from 6 months to a year for the tattoo to fully fade. You will need to avoid tanning or too much sun for 4-6 weeks before your treatment. In some cases, it may take a series of treatments 4-6 weeks apart to achieve your personal goals.

Recovering alcoholic changes his life after having prison tattoos removed

La Quinta — With his neat trimmed goatee and preppy clothes, Brian Byrd, 44, looks like a clean-cut guy.

But underneath his collared shirt are the remnants of a life the La Quinta resident doesn't like to talk about and is eager to forget.

The recovering alcoholic has been in and out of jail for a good portion of his life but now works at a service station. During his times in prison, Byrd received some tattoos that served as shields to keep people away — devil horns on his head, ink on his hands, face, neck and back of his head.

Byrd wanted to remove those marks and hopefully fade the memory of his troubled past.

For almost two years, he has had dozens of laser tattoo removal treatments done by Dr. Matthew Werner of La Quinta MedSpa.

“I had tattoos all over, and it was hard to get employment like that,” Byrd said. “I knew I had to start changing some things to make myself more presentable.”

Byrd learned of Werner's work from a friend at the ABC Recovery Center in Indio where he was undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction. A program offered through the Employment Development Department, in conjunction with Werner's donated time, gave Byrd the opportunity to start tattoo removal treatments for free.

“I thought it was kind of cool dealing with these guys, and it gives them a second chance to live a normal life,” Werner said. “Even when the program ran out of money, I kept doing treatments on them until they were finished.”

Regulations for Military Tattoos

Tattoo Regulations In The Military

Once limited to the parts of the body covered by long sleeved shirts and pants, the army now allows tattoos on the backs of the hands and on the back side of the neck. The primary requirement is that they are not “extremist, indecent, sexist, or racist”, per Army Regulation 670-1.

There’s only one reason the United States Army relaxed its restriction on tattoos. They realized that they were turning highly qualified individuals away over their skin art. One caveat is that the military still reserves the right to determine what is in good taste, so it might be a good idea to run it by your commanding officer before actually having needle put to skin. There also remains a limit on how many tattoos can cover any area. There are no sleeves or Japanese suits for soldiers, at least for right now.

2 Tattoos or not 2 Tattoos?

Two Tattoos? Let’s ponder that question. And no, I don’t mean the question of whether or not a second tattoo is needed. What I want to lay out for you is why “tattoo” is in our book twice.

Does tattoo have two meanings? Yes. It does.

One you probably knew (and the other one):

If you’re like me, maybe you’ve seen and enjoyed a festival that included fife and drum corps, the sound of bagpipes and bugles, and people in “very military” looking uniforms. You just didn’t know that may have been a “tattoo.”

Next to the Fourth of July’s fireworks and patriotic music and parades, these types of events hold a special place in my heart. That feeling only grew fonder when I later found out that these “very military” looking uniformed performers were borne of military tradition and history. I was just slow to realize.

The term “tattoo” dates from the seventeenth century’s British Army days. Drummers from the garrison were sent out into the towns at 2130—that’s #770 or Military time for 9:30pm—each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was known as “doe den tap toe” and encouraged the innkeepers to turn off the taps, stop serving beer, and send the soldiers home for the night.

I can’t help but wonder if soldiers were not only being called from the inns but out of the “tattoo parlors” as well.

According to PBS, tattoos for early-American military members were a tradition started in 1846 by Martin Hildebrandt who set up a permanent tattoo shop in New York City and began tattooing sailors and military servicemen from both sides of the Civil War. I can easily imagine them fresh from the fields of war celebrating the latest successful battle or memorializing their fallen brothers forever marked on their hearts and skin.

Tattoos Protected by the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court

This debate is rather important to us as tattoo artists. We're happy to see that the Supreme Court is upholding the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights on this matter and can only hope that it is definitely a sign of improvement overall in the views held regarding tattooing as a form of art.

Tattoos are “pure speech” & protected under the Constitution

In November, 2011, an Arizona appellate court declared that “a tattoo, the act of tattooing, and the business of tattooing constitute pure speech entitled to the highest level of protection under our state and federal constitutions.”
The issue came before the court when Ryan and Laetitia Coleman applied to the City of Mesa, Arizona for a business permit to open a tattoo shop. They considered themselves “body artists” and owned a similar business (Angel Tattoo) in Nice, France. The City required tattoo parlors, body piercing and pawn shops to be licensed. The City Council voted against the Colemans explaining it wasn’t appropriate for the neighborhood. No evidence was presented regarding adverse effects to local residences or businesses. Opponents merely speculated that the tattoo shop might have a negative impact on the area.
The Colemans filed a lawsuit alleging a violation of their free speech and a denial of their equal protection rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments. They pointed out that Arizona’s constitution guaranteed that “every person may freely speak, write or publish on all subjects, being responsible for the abuse of that right.” Furthermore, the U.S. Constitution prohibits the government from “abridging the freedom of speech or of the press.” Their equal protection claim was based on the fact that other businesses in Mesa were treated differently in the licensing process.
The trial court ruled in favor of the City of Mesa and the Colemans appealed to a higher court. On November 3, 2011, the Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that “tattooing is purely an expressive activity entitled to fullest protection afforded by the First Amendment.” The court ruled that a tattoo conveys a message and, as such, is protected speech. Reasonable government restrictions may be imposed regarding time, place and manner of conducting a business.
Judge Ann Scott Timmer wrote the opinion outlining a brief history of First Amendment protections and the difference between “pure speech” and “symbolic conduct.” Speech that is written or spoken such as a newspaper ad, a verbal comment at a public rally, poetry, a painting, stained glass window, radio, TV, music and live entertainment are examples of pure speech. Expressive or symbolic speech includes voting, wearing a black armband to school, marching and picketing on a public street. Unprotected speech are those expressions that consist of “fighting words,” obscenity, words that incite violence or defame another person. Each of these examples has been litigated in the courts and are cited in Timmer’s opinion (see link below). If you are researching the First Amendment for a paper or presentation at school, this opinion is a good start.

Tattoos Gaining Acceptance

Among mainstream tattoo lovers, acceptance has always been an issue. Whether you’re an executive, or a mechanic, there has always been at least one location where your body art has not been welcome – typically, at work.

Happily however, those days are coming to an end as more and more people become open-minded about tattoos and those who sport them.

There are many ways a person can express himself or herself artistically.

So, why get a tattoo — a piece of art you can't sell off or return to a retailer?
"Everyone expresses themselves differently," said Tim Evitts, owner and artist at Pinckney's Magic Touch Tattoo. "I say, to each their own. If people like them, that's fine. If people don't, that's fine, too."
Once thought of as art for bikers and thugs, more and more people today are opting for body art. The art form has become much more accepted than in the past, Evitts said.
Mike "Bagz" Bagwell, a six-year ink artist at Howell's Eternal Tattoos and Eternal Ink, said he's seen firsthand the misconceptions some people have of those with tattoos.
"When my wife and I bought our house, there was an older couple in the house next to ours who have since becomes friends but thought, 'Oh, no, this guy has tattoos. There goes the neighborhood,' " said Bagwell, a Clarkston resident.
"It was like they were judging me from the get-go," Bagwell continued. "He had a tree that fell in his yard, and I was the first one over there with my saw to help him cut it up. So, yeah, I do get stereotyped at times."
The art is more widely accepted in today's society, but tattoos aren't without risk.
Infections, such as hepatitis and HIV, are possible, as dirty needles can pass infection from one person to another, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
"Anyone wanting to get a tattoo should also make sure their artist uses a single-use needle," said James Henry, supervisor for the Livingston County Department of Public Health.
"Watch them take the needle out of the packaging. You can even ask the artist to sterilize their equipment. You may even want to watch them wash their hands, too," he said.
The FDA has also reported allergies to various ink pigments in both permanent and temporary tattoos have been reported and can cause problems. Unwanted scar tissue may form when getting or removing a tattoo. People may have swelling or burning in the tattoo when having an MRI, according to the FDA.

Pickens Museum Spotlights SC Tattoos

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A new exhibit will put the spotlight on tattooing in South Carolina. From June 25-Aug. 18, the Pickens County Museum of Art & History will present three exhibits: A History of Tattooing in South Carolina; J. Michael Johnson's INK Beneath the Skin: A Private Collection of Body Art; and Adornment.

The Adornment exhibit is a collection of work by members and guests of the CAFfeine Contemporary Art Forum.

According to a release from the museum, the History of Tattooing in South Carolina exhibit is representative of the diverse cultural reactions to body art. Tattooing has been practiced by the Native Americans in this area since prehistoric times. Within South Carolina, the reputation of tattoos has evolved from sinister convict symbols and the bazaar circus performers to the pride of military service. Contemporary wearers of tattoos often see their tattoos as a personal art collection. It is that sentiment that curators say inspired this exhibit.

The Pickens County Museum is located at the corner of Highway 178 and Johnson Street in Pickens. The museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission is free but donations are welcomed.
