After a woman undergoes a masectomy and breast reconstruction the new breast is a blank canvas. While the operation can recreate the size and shape of the patients natural breast by using her own body tissue or implants, the darker, sensitive skin of the nipple is usually removed entirely. Skin grafts can recreate the look of the original nipple but the procedure isn't popular because "most patients don't want to have another surgery and another scar., says Dr. Leo Keegan, an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai.

Tattoo Artist Gives Confidence to Breast Cancer Patients

Tattoo artist helps women regain confidence after breast surgery with her artwork

After 16 years as a tattoo artist, Sarah Peacock has an extensive portfolio of the art she's immortalized on people's skin.

But some of her most meaningful works aren't found among the pages of portraits in her collection. They can be seen only on the chests of breast cancer survivors.

For about three years, Peacock, co-owner of Artfuel Inc. tattoo parlor in Wilmington, has been tattooing nipples for survivors who have undergone breast-reconstruction surgery.

Sometimes, her customers have had their nipples reconstructed by a plastic surgeon; other times, she's tattooing directly on the breast itself. In both cases, Peacock uses around nine shades of ink to realistically shade and tint the flesh to perfectly mirror what each woman's nipples looked like prior to her mastectomy.

"I tattoo tonally," said Peacock, who works from the "before" photos taken by her customers' plastic surgeons. "I use as many colors as it takes."

Nipple reconstruction is the final step in the breast-rebuilding process, meaning that for Peacock's customers, the trip to the tattoo parlor is the last phase of a long and painful cosmetic process.
But the result, they say, is worth it.

"Before I had the nipples done, it was literally two mounds sitting there and it did not look normal. It did not look real," said Susie Cox-Parker, 47, tattooed by Peacock after her double mastectomy in 2008. "I was like, ‘No, I'm too young, I'm not supposed to look like this, and I want to be as real and normal-looking as possible.'

"It made a big difference to me."

Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo Will Support Racing Against Breast Cancer

SEEKONK, MA. October 2, 2010 --- Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo, a one of a kind mobile tattoo studio based out of Portsmouth, RI, will be sponsoring Racing Against Breast Cancer at Seekonk Speedway. Jeffrey Goyette, renowned tattoo artist and owner of Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio, created the traveling studio.

Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo will assist in raising money and creating awareness for breast cancer that affects over thousands of Americans each year. Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo will have their 78 ½ foot mobile tattoo studio stationed inside the gates of Seekonk Speedway on Saturday, October 2nd from 2-6pm. Inflicting Ink will not be tattooing during the event but they have designed special breast cancer t-shirts where $3.00 from every t-shirt sale will benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

During the Race Against Breast Cancer spectators can watch the ISMA SUPERS take to the track, Lee Small Block Supers, a 75-Lap Northeast Mini Stock Race, and a New England powder puff championship race using Seekonk Legal Enduro cars!
