Tattoos Gaining Acceptance

Among mainstream tattoo lovers, acceptance has always been an issue. Whether you’re an executive, or a mechanic, there has always been at least one location where your body art has not been welcome – typically, at work.

Happily however, those days are coming to an end as more and more people become open-minded about tattoos and those who sport them.

The buzz on body art

September 23, 2011
There are many ways a person can express himself or herself artistically.
Correction: Darl Papple, an artist at Magic Touch worked Wednesday on the "Dungeons and Dragons" tattoo. It was reported earlier that Tim Evitts was the artist.
So, why get a tattoo — a piece of art you can't sell off or return to a retailer?
"Everyone expresses themselves differently," said Tim Evitts, owner and artist at Pinckney's Magic Touch Tattoo. "I say, to each their own. If people like them, that's fine. If people don't, that's fine, too."
Once thought of as art for bikers and thugs, more and more people today are opting for body art. The art form has become much more accepted than in the past, Evitts said.
Mike "Bagz" Bagwell, a six-year ink artist at Howell's Eternal Tattoos and Eternal Ink, said he's seen firsthand the misconceptions some people have of those with tattoos.
"When my wife and I bought our house, there was an older couple in the house next to ours who have since becomes friends but thought, 'Oh, no, this guy has tattoos. There goes the neighborhood,' " said Bagwell, a Clarkston resident.
"It was like they were judging me from the get-go," Bagwell continued. "He had a tree that fell in his yard, and I was the first one over there with my saw to help him cut it up. So, yeah, I do get stereotyped at times."
The art is more widely accepted in today's society, but tattoos aren't without risk.
Infections, such as hepatitis and HIV, are possible, as dirty needles can pass infection from one person to another, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
"Anyone wanting to get a tattoo should also make sure their artist uses a single-use needle," said James Henry, supervisor for the Livingston County Department of Public Health.
"Watch them take the needle out of the packaging. You can even ask the artist to sterilize their equipment. You may even want to watch them wash their hands, too," he said.
The FDA has also reported allergies to various ink pigments in both permanent and temporary tattoos have been reported and can cause problems. Unwanted scar tissue may form when getting or removing a tattoo. People may have swelling or burning in the tattoo when having an MRI, according to the FDA.

The Only Way to Become a Tattoo Artist

With the explosion of tattoo reality shows on television, anyone and everyone now believes that they can become a tattoo artist simply by hanging out at a school for a couple weeks and buying the right equipment.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Real tattoo artists begin their careers under the guardianship of a mentor; an experienced licensed tattoo artist who is able to explain and teach the necessary precautions, sterile procedures, business practices, and skills needed to become a responsible, quality, tattoo artist.

It's important to understand that learning how to hold a tattoo machine, and having some drawing skill are not enough to be a real tattoo artist. The real education comes through apprenticing under a reputable and experienced, licensed artist.

The other area where most people feel they may be able to get by on mediocrity, is actual artistic talent and ability. If you are only a so-so artist with a pen, pencil or paint, what makes you believe you'll do any better on human skin? The best tattoo artists have a substantial background in art, be it as an illustrator, painter, or other highly developed artistic talent in these areas.

Something to keep in mind before choosing what you may see as the easier way in a tattoo school is that the shops that will hire you as a tattoo school graduate are few and far between. Even if you do somehow manage to convince an owner to hire you, it will not be as an artist. You will start where everyone starts, as an apprentice learning the real world skills you'll need to be a quality tattoo artist.

Tattoo and Body Piercing Infections and Treatments

Tattoos and body piercings, by their very nature, are basically wounds. And like all wounds are open to infection. With more than 16% of the American population sporting some form of body art or piercing, it then behooves us to be fully aware of the dangers and treatment for our newly inflicted wounds, including what to look for in signs of an infected tattoo or piercing. It also goes without saying that because this is technically an invasive procedure, you should choose an above-board shop that operates according to the Department of Health codes in your area and practices sterile procedures from start to finish.

As always, if you are in doubt about what looks good and what doesn't concerning your tattoo, seek medical attention immediately. Still, there are some hard and fast rules that do apply when determining whether something has 'gone bad' with your tattoo or body piercing.

With reference to body jewelry, the area around the piercing will definitely show signs of redness for approximately a week to 10 days. Expect it to appear 'angry', although anything in the range of swelling or colored discharge should be considered suspect and treatment arranged at once. Genital piercings in particular are subject to increased risks of infection due to the nature of the area being pierced. Any indication, no matter how minor, that these piercings are not healing well, needs to be addressed with a medical professional as soon as possible.

Tattoos can be a bit more complex in determining whether an area is infected or not. Because there are in effect a myriad number of small wounds inflicted on the skin, the area will become somewhat swollen, a bit weepy, and possibly tender in the days following the treatment. You should be given instructions by the tattoo artist regarding how to care for your tattoo in the days following the application.

If the weeping begins to smell badly, or show signs of discoloration, or if a fever or body aches accompany this symptom, seek medical treatment immediately. Instances of infected tattoos have been reported where serious medical conditions have resulted, so infection needs to be taken quite seriously.

The final stage of your tattoo may include some shedding or flaking of the of skin. It is important not to pick at the area, and to keep it very clean. Moisturize the site and redress it after washing with a mild unscented non-bar soap as needed to keep the tattoo free from infection.

With proper care and maintenance, your body piercing and tattoos will continue to provide you with a lifetime of infection-free healthy enjoyment.
