Backyard Tattoo Parties

What is a backyard tattoo party?

A backyard tattoo party is any outdoor (or indoor) situation, where someone will tattoo people without the benefit of a sterile environment; which can include but is not limited to the ability to sterilize equipment or tools, and places where there will be wooden surfaces that cannot be sterilized with cleansers. The situation may or may not involve needles that are used more than once, but if the artist is not using disposable needles, you need to seriously reconsider your decision to get tattooed at such a function.

Understanding your risks

If you are considering a backyard tattoo party, consider the guidelines imposed by the CDC with regard to tattoo artists, and the risks for skin diseases and death before you let someone touch your skin with a less than perfect needle in a less than perfect environment.

The CDC has the following recommendations for tattoo artists:

• All artists should be licensed and use single use, disposable needles and razors for tattoing and piercing
• All equipment needs to be sterilized, and only equipment that can either be sterilized or thrown away should be used in tattooing or body piercing procedures
• All artists should be wearing gloves, and wash and disinfect their hands and any surfaces involved in tattooing or piercing before and after every session (wood is not an acceptable surface as it cannot be properly disinfected, and the virus that causes Hepatitis can live for up to four days on a non-disinfected surface)
• All tools and equipment that is not disposable should be cleaned and sterilized after every use
• In addition to work surfaces, all surfaces in the tattoo studio, such as chairs, tables, and counters should be cleaned and disinfected consistently to prevent the spread of bacteria and pathogens or viruses

How to avoid trouble

Before getting a tattoo ask the artist the following questions, and make sure the answers match up as well:
Q. Are you a licensed tattoo artist, working in a licensed facility?
A. Yes. (they should be able to also tell you which state they are licensed in, and which studio they work for)
Q. Did you apprentice under a reputable tattoo artist in a licensed sterile facility?
A. Yes. (they should also be able to provide you with the name of their teacher and the studio)
Q. Do you practice continuing education and updates to your license on a yearly basis?
A. Yes. (they should be able to help you understand the sterile processes they use, why they use them, what the law requires them to use, and what kind of continuing education updates they take yearly)

Remember that there are very few backyard situations that would be considered a sterile environment for tattooing, but a good rule of thumb to consider is whether or not you would let your dentist perform surgery on you in the same environment - because dentists have the highest incidences of cross-contamination and blood born pathogen illnesses of any environment, and if you wouldn't let them pull a tooth in the same environment, don't get a tattoo in it.

Tattoo Festival spotlights artistry

The latest trends in tattooing, as well as some ancient techniques, are the big draw at the 15th annual Atlanta Tattoo Festival, where dozens of the world’s most well-known tattoo artists will display and demonstrate their artwork.

In some cases, they may even tattoo you, if you dare.

Highlights from this year’s roster of talent include Pili Mo'o, who is known as the "Tufinga Tatau," or "traditional tatau master," who has traveled from the Canary Islands for live demonstrations of the traditional Marquesian and Polynesian tattoo style.

The three-day event features seminars, vendors and a poolside bikini contest.

New this year is the addition of live music with Six Shot Revival, Kadense, and Killer and the Savage. Other highlights include a book talk and signing with Crazy Philadelphia Eddie, a noted tattoo artist who has chronicled his life in six volumes, beginning with his start at Coney Island, where tattoos cost 50 cents apiece in 1952.

“These are not your everyday tattoos and definitely nothing like the heart with ‘mom’ written on it,” festival director Jennifer Reyes said. “Some artists are so specialized, focusing for example on just underwater sea creatures or mechanical drawings. The tattoos will absolutely blow your mind.”
Ink-N-Iron: Tattoo & Kustom Culture Festival

Hot rods, pin-up girls and tats take center stage this month at the 8th Annual Ink-n-Iron festival on the illustrious Queen Mary. This hellacious happening has something for everyone, from cabaret/burlesque shows and the motorama exhibit to screening of cult movies like Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill and Drag Strip Girl—and don’t forget the punk rock after-hours karaoke, which is the only kind of song anyone should sing after a day of being thirsty in the sun.

There’ll also be a horde of tattooing to by done by 280 of the best tat artists in the world, as well as ink contests and prizes for best sleeves, chest panel, overall male, overall female and more. But wait, there’s more! While you’re mingling with the corseted pinup girls and muscle guys, rock-a-billy, be bop and punk rock your days and nights away with live music from the incredible Detroit Cobras, The Vandals, The Buzzcocks, Anti-Flagg, Fishbone, The Paladins, The Rev Tones, Fishtank Ensemble and Vicky and the Vengents—to name but a few. Hit the 15th annual event started by Tony Olivas of Sacred Heart Tattoo

Fifteen years ago, Tony Olivas, founder of Sacred Heart Tattoo (of which the original is in Little Five Points) created the Atlanta Tattoo Festival and since then, it's evolved into a weekend that draws thousands of visitors from all over the world.

This Friday through Sunday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Atlanta-Perimeter Northwest, ink lovers can experience live tattooing from world-class artists, seminars, live music from Southern rock to hip-hop, book signings (Dennis Dwyer and Crazy Philadelphis Eddie), unique vendors, contests, food, drinks, and much more.

And for the first time ever, there will be live tattoo demonstrations of the stunning traditional Marquesian and Polynesian methods by Pili Mo'o, a "traditional tatau master" who's traveling all the way from the Canary Islands for the occasion.

With all that's going on, what is Olivas looking forward to the most?

"Just everybody having a good time!" he said.

That sounds about right.

Tattoo Culture Alive and Well

While it may be difficult for some to accept or realize, the art of tattooing is here to stay. With its long history, steeped in cultural and tribal roots, for those who are tattoo fans, nothing will convince them that the future of tattoos are in any danger at all from non-supporters. Very often, tattoo fans become the people who dedicate their lives to preserving the art form, as well as supporting any efforts by others to do so.

Once taboo, tattoos now the new fashion statement

Kathmandu, May 7 (IANS) When Lokesh Varma, the son of an affluent army family in New Delhi, announced he wanted to forswear his MBA degree and his job with a multinational company to become a tattoo artist, his parents were speechless with horror.

"Tattoos were then thought to be something only sported by low life - bikers, goons and drug addicts," the 27-year-old, manning his tattoo stall at the Nepal Tattoo Convention, the first international tattoo convention held in Kathmandu last month, told IANS.

"My parents thought tattoos were not respectable and tattooing could not be a viable profession accepted by society. But that was before cable television came and changed people's way of thinking."

Varma today runs his tattoo studio, Devilztattooz, with his wife Sanobar. It is a thriving business that imports paints and equipment from abroad - the US and Thailand - with a basic design that could take half an hour, costing Rs.3,000.

"It's more channels like Discovery that bring images of distant different cultures to your home that helped tattoos get social acceptance, more than Angelina Jolie or other tattooed film stars. If you see something every day, there comes a day when you want to try it out too."

Bijay Gurung, a partner at Mohan's Tattoo Inn, the pioneering tattoo studio in Kathmandu that hosted the convention, says tattoos have been an integral part of Asia's indigenous culture. So are piercings.

"The Tharu community, who were the original residents of the Terai plains, tattoo their bodies as part of their ancient culture," says the 37-year-old, who besides tattoos and piercings, also sports blue hair.

When Gurung, the son of a British Army soldier who grew up in Pokhara city, first coloured his hair blue while still in school, the result was traumatic.

"It was in 1992 and I was summoned by the police," he says. "The police chief told me, you have a choice: either cut your hair or we will put you in prison. I thought it was my life and I had the right to dye my hair any colour I wanted. But what can a vulnerable teen do against the system!"

Though forced to do the cops' bidding at that time, Gurung has returned to the same style.

"I am the way I express myself," he says. "We decided to host the convention because we want the world to know that tattoos have been a part of our culture and remove the stigma on them. Also, in the year the Nepal Tourism Board is promoting Nepal as a prime tourist destination, we want to develop our country as a cultural, tattoo destination."

Tattoo artistes from France, Italy, Germany, Thailand and India gathered in an upmarket hotel in Kathmandu for the convention, subtly marking the status change in an adornment once regarded as the hallmark of drug addicts and dreadlocked hippies.

For French tattoo artist Laurent Maina, tattooing is a form of spiritual expression. The 39-year-old from Marseilles does only "Buddhist tattoos", an intricate mesh of divine figures and accompanying holy flora.

Unlike the nude girl tattoos pulp fiction attributed to sailors, clients seek tattoos of the Buddha, Shiva, and even Sai Baba. Holy Tibetan phrases are also in vogue along with lines from the Gita.

But though Bollywood has recently joined the vogue - with stars like Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan sporting tattoos - the pros say India is still wary of experimenting deeply.

"Indians go for small tattoos - mostly names, tribal art or customised designs," Chitra Kumar Chhetri, whose Yogiz Tattoo Inn opened in Siliguri in 2010, told IANS.

"There are no demands for full-sleeve tattoos and large tattoos on the face. However, we have managed to create a market in eastern India."

The first Yogiz Tattoo Inn opened in Kalimpong in 2005 and gets clients from Kolkata, Assam, Orissa, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and even Bhutan. This year, a branch is planned in Assam.

Tattoo artists are unanimous that hygiene is essential for the profession.

"We insist on using disposable syringes or sterilised ones for each client to prevent blood-borne diseases like HIV/AIDS and hepatitis," says Varma. "It's not only the client but also the artist who's at risk."

Sterile Tattoo Environments and RI Tattoo Law

Jeff Goyette, the owner of Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio in Portsmouth RI, and also the creator, builder and owner of the Inflicting Ink Traveling Tattoo truck, has been involved in the tattoo industry for almost all of his adult life, making him a veritable expert in this field.

In the State of Rhode Island, the last time the tattooing laws were rewritten was in 1997. Due to Jeff’s extensive knowledge in the areas of blood-born pathogens, sterile procedures, cross contamination, barrier coding, and the tattoo industry, he was asked by the State to consult with them regarding rewriting the bylaws and what needed to be contained in order to keep the public safe.

After several months of consulting with Vincent Bacari, who was in charge of the Medical Tattooing Department of the Department of Health, the new laws went into effect.

Although the laws were altered to provide a somewhat more sterile approach to tattooing, many of Jeff’s suggestions were labeled an ‘unnecessary precaution’ and were not adopted. Jeff feels that there is still too much of a gap in the procedures that the State notes as acceptable and what he considers the ultimate protective environment in which to tattoo. And though the standards are improving, he is adamant that the procedures and environment at Inflicting Ink Tattoo Studio and Traveling Tattoo remain well above the State recommendations in the areas of sterilization, environment, and sterile practices.
