RIVES TOWNSHIP — Two years ago, he led a white pride march from Loomis Park to downtown Jackson.
Six months ago, he abandoned the white supremacy movement.
On April 15, he was baptized.
Five days later, Chris Simpson sat in the waiting room of a skin and vein clinic, waiting to start the long and painful process of having his tattoos, most replete with Nazi or white pride iconography, removed.
"Hate will blind you to so many things. It will stop you from having so many things," Simpson said. "It consumes you."
Simpson, a 38-year-old garbage man and former Marine, has given up on hate. It is a decision he made for his family, for his wife Misty and his children, 9-year-old Cody, 7-year-old Kayleigh, 5-year-old Nikolaus and the 2-year-old twins, Tyrsson and Aeric. It is a change that has left Simpson feeling better these past six months than he has in the last 12 years.
"He's just a lot happier," said Simpson's wife, Misty. "Happier all the time, when we're out; when we're at home; especially when we're helping people."
"WE DIDN'T PREACH HATE"
The March 21, 2010, white pride march from Loomis Park to E. Michigan Avenue perplexed, angered and offended many.
"This type of ignorance has no place here," read the sign of one protestor at Loomis Park.
Simpson led the march. Nine supports followed him. More than 100 protesters followed them. Simpson said protesters spit at him, threatened him and called him a racist, a bigot, a honkie, a cracker.
"We did what all the other races did. We tried to have a march that said we are proud to be white," Simpson said, recalling the march.
Even without the tattoos, which sprawl down his arms and up his neck, Simpson's presence can be intimidating. At 6 feet and 245 pounds, he fills out clothing with authority. He does not think his tattoos draw notice, but they are hard to miss.
"PURE HATE," is tattooed across his knuckles. His forearms read "BLOOD" and "HONOR." There are four battle axes in the shape of a swastika on his left shoulder with the words "Supreme White Power" over them. There are several wolf's hooks, a Nazi symbol. The iconic lightning bolts associated with Nazi Germany's Schutzstaffel, the SS, are above his right wrist. There's a Nazi war bird on his chest. There are tattoos of a Valkyrie, a Viking, and Thor with swastikas drawn in his helmet. Some of Simpson's tattoos are specific to the white supremacy movement, some to his former devotion to Norse mythology. Some are for his family. Some are "very stupid," he said. Some, like a sun and wizard, are meaningless. Some, like his Marine Corps tattoo and one in memory of his daughter, have deep meaning. There are 42 tattoos, he thinks. An explanation of them all takes several minutes.
Simpson was a member of Battalion 14, a white pride group with supporters in Michigan. The group had a zero tolerance policy on drugs and violence. It did not allow any illegal behavior, Simpson said. The group sought to help white people, donating baskets of formula and supplies to mothers of newborn babies and helping children on dialysis. Battalion 14 bought Christmas gifts for needy families. In their 12 years with various white pride groups, Chris and Misty Simpson estimate they donated more than $15,000.
"All to help people," Simpson said. "We didn't preach hate. ...For us, it was just about taking care of our own."

Tattoos More Accepted By Many

I’ve been pondering the possibility of getting a tattoo recently. But, in doing so, I’ve had to consider the troubled history of those who’ve gone under the needle.
People have been permanently decorating their bodies longer than Christianity has been around. It was often used as a means of therapy for arthritis, or a sign of loyalty to the gods or country.
More recently, tattoos have been associated with criminals. Gangs have long used tattoos as a way to identify themselves to one another, while many convicts have tattooed themselves as a certain type of badge of honour.
It seems to me though, that ten years ago, tattoos were not as socially acceptable as they are now.
Even many professionals today now go to their daily meetings with ink up their arms.
But what has caused this change?
Well, personally I think there has been a shift in our culture that has allowed people to express themselves without fear of being judged. The constant hunt for political correctness and objectivity in the hiring process has changed the way employers react to a little bit of ink on the wrists of job-hunting hopefuls.
I asked my own employer if she would change her opinion on a prospective employee if they had tattoos. Though she said someone with facial ink would probably change her perspective (have you seen Mike Tyson lately?), she said it’s unlikely that some modest colourings would alter their chances at a job.
But something else in her answer struck me as an important factor. She said she often doesn’t see her prospective employees because so much of the hiring process is now done online.
It’s hard not to notice the affects that the advent of the Internet have had on our world. But besides the looming elimination of paper and the ease of which we can now communicate with each other, there is anonymity in the virtual world that allows people to freely express themselves. And we can do that without others judging those expressions based on physical appearance.
Somehow this attitude seems to have seeped into the physical world. Though racism and bullying are still big problems in our society, I think we as a society have moved in the right direction in the sense that more and more of us base our opinions on others on how they treat us, and not how they look.
In many ways, tattoos are the most personal form of art. They likely have some meaning to those who wear them and are their forever. They become as much part of the person as their fingers and toes.
The fact that they are more accepted socially now than ever before tells me that we can and will end bigger problems like racism and bullying.
I will most definitely be getting a tattoo, if not just to express myself, than at least to stand up and say that if you can accept my tattoo, than you can accept anyone.

Tattoo Enthusiast and Boston Bruins Ference Beats Suspension
Hats off to Andrew Ference, well-known tattoo enthusiast and member of the Boston Bruins NHL team, for beating any talk of suspension from the team after their Game 7 win in the quarterfinals. A great article regarding the proposed disciplinary action and the findings of NHL senior vice president Mike Murphy follows below.
The NHL held a disciplinary hearing with Ference via phone on Thursday morning and decided the hit wasn't worthy of a suspension.
Mike Murphy, NHL senior vice president of hockey operations, conducted the review.
"During the hearing, Ference stated that this was incidental contact; that he saw his opponent out of the corner of his eye at the last instance and braced for the collision," Murphy said Thursday in a statement. "He further stated that the contact was unintentional. As there was no apparent injury on the play, I have concluded that this incident does not warrant discipline."

Andrew Ference not suspended
BOSTON -- Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference will not be suspended for his hit on Canadiens forward Jeff Halpern midway through the third period of Boston's 4-3 overtime win in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series.The NHL held a disciplinary hearing with Ference via phone on Thursday morning and decided the hit wasn't worthy of a suspension.
Mike Murphy, NHL senior vice president of hockey operations, conducted the review.
"During the hearing, Ference stated that this was incidental contact; that he saw his opponent out of the corner of his eye at the last instance and braced for the collision," Murphy said Thursday in a statement. "He further stated that the contact was unintentional. As there was no apparent injury on the play, I have concluded that this incident does not warrant discipline."

More young people are flocking to tattoo parlors to get inked under the impression that it no longer has to be forever. Some experts believe that the demand for removal technology in the future may grow exponentially, creating a greater need for qualified dermatologists. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, tattoo regrets are common — in fact, 17 percent of those who get tattoos consider getting them removed.
Now with the availability of tattoo laser removal and the introduction of new ink that can be more easily removed, tattoos are starting to mark a phase in someone's life rather than becoming a permanently inked statement.
"It's likely that more medical professionals will be trained in laser removal in the upcoming years, as tattoo removal is expected to rise," said Allen Falkner, owner of Fade Fast Laser Tattoo Removal. "Tattooing is still a growing industry and tattoo removal will most likely see a similar growth pattern."
"The more people [who] get them done, the more there will be a need for removal," added Falkner, who has been performing laser tattoo removal for four years and previously operated a tattoo studio for 15 years.
Dermatologist Brooke Jackson, founder of the Skin Wellness Center of Chicago and an assistant professor at Northwestern University said she's noticed an increased interest in tattoo removal over the years.
"I can't tell you how many people I've worked on who have tattoos who wish they had never gotten one," Jackson said, adding that interest in the technology is on the rise. "They get one as teens or in their early 20s and then need to interview to get a job and wonder why they aren't getting hired."

"Most lasers dispense their energy over a time of about one-thousandth of a second; however, a tattoo removal laser uses a smaller amount of energy over a time period that is about 1,000 times more rapid," said Gregory Laurence, a laser and cosmetic surgeon at Memphis, Tenn.-based Germantown Aesthetics. "This causes a vibration effect rather than a heat effect."
"The colored pigment is literally shaken up and broken up, allowing the body to come and remove the freed-up pigment," Laurence said.
David Bank, a dermatologist and the president of the New York State Society for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, said a tattoo's color, depth and the chemical composition of the ink all affect how it responds to laser light.
For example, black, red, dark orange and dark blue tattoos will usually respond relatively quickly to treatment with laser. However, green, purple, brown, light orange and light blue colors may respond more slowly. But overall, most tattoos can be successfully removed, given a sufficient number of treatments — most typically, between six and eight sessions and at intervals of six to eight weeks. Since the laser light selectively targets the undesired ink, other tissues remain largely unaffected. However, some report minimal discomfort, comparing it to the sensation of being snapped with a rubber band against the skin.
"In some cases, patients seek removal right away, even within the first week of tattoo placement," said Laurence. "But actually the best time to start removal is four months or longer after the placement of the tattoo."
"In the hands of an untrained individual, a laser can cause scars, burns, scars and other forms of damage to the skin and underlying tissue," Falkner said. "However, if the machines are operated by qualified and trained technicians working under the supervision of a medical director, the procedure is actually quite safe."
The cost of the removal of the tattoo is also typically 10 to 20 times as expensive as the artwork.
Some people who are uncertain about getting a tattoo are turning to a type of permanent ink that is engineered so it can be removed more easily with minimal lasering. (Infinitink, from the company Freedom2, is offered at various nationwide tattoo parlors.)
According to Freedom2, 25 percent of all people over the age of 18 in the United States already have a tattoo and another 25 percent are thinking about getting one but haven’t.
"An Infinitink tattoo is just as permanent as any other, but it can be removed with minimal lasering," the company noted on its website. "It's there forever, unless you change your mind."
The Infinitink tattoo is applied by inserting ink through the skin just like normal tattooing, but according to the site, scientists have created an alternative to help the dissolution of the pigment when passed over with a laser.
"That means less expense, less time and less pain," the company said.
However, since it's still a new technique that needs more testing, some doctors are still undecided about the alternative.
"Time will really tell if it is beneficial," Jackson said.

* Readers trimmed the fat from their diets, but not the fun. Fat-free food is the favorite food trend of 26% of our readers and cholesterol-lowering drugs were the medical advance that made 41% of our readers lives better. But the #1 favorite food trend for readers is gourmet coffee (29%), followed by the aforementioned fat-free food and then the guilty pleasures of cupcakes ranked #3 at 15%.
* The sudden unexpected deaths of two youthful and promising figures had a profound effect on 50% of our readers. Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy, Jr. ranked #1 and 2, with Pope John Paul II, who died at the age of 84, in third place.
* In light of today's challenging economy, the survey revealed a potential growth area for employment. Tattoos ranked as the #1 least-favorite fashion trend of the last 25 years, leading one reader to note, "the best future profession for making money will be tattoo removal."

Laser Tattoo Removal Gets Easier and Less Expensive
Tattoo removal is an area where most tattoo enthusiasts can agree, the scales are unbalanced between how long it takes to get a tattoo and how long it takes to have one removed. Combined with the cost of tattoo removal, which can often be more than 5 times the cost of the tattoo, depending upon the colors involved and the size of the tattoo, it is easy to understand why only 6 percent of the 25% of enthusiasts who would like their tattoo removed can afford to do so. Additionally, it can be extremely painful as there are treatments to first lighten the tattoo, and then treatments to actually get rid of the scar tissue resulting from the removal itself.
A new procedure however may make tattoo removal a lot faster, less painful, and much more affordable for those who have tattoo regret in the future. Many tattoo regrets, but not much money

The permanent tattoo on David Hudson’s ring finger only provided him with temporary pleasure.
Last fall, about four or five years after he paid a Dayton tattoo artist $80 dollars to etch the name of his bride-to-be into the area above his knuckle, Hudson began to view the tattoo more as an unsightly ink stain than an expression of his love. His feelings about the tattoo changed after he and his wife divorced.
“I got it as kind of an engagement ring, but things didn’t work out,” said the 48-year-old Kettering resident. “But I got it for the right reasons.”
Except in rare cases, tattoos are supposed to be permanent.
Part of their appeal is their perceived irreversibility, said Dr. Gary Palmer, a dermatologist in Centerville who performs tattoo-removal surgery.
But feelings about body art often change over time. The designs and words that originally mean so much to people when they get the tattoos later on become unwanted reminders of a former partner, time in their life or state of mind they would like to forget, Palmer said.
“A lot of times, people want them off because they’ve changed,” Palmer said.
About 36 percent of Americans between ages 18 to 25, and 40 percent of people 26 to 40, have tattoos, according to a Pew Research Center survey.
It is estimated that about 45 million to 50 million people in the United States have tattoos.

Hudson is paying a local dermatologist $100 per treatment to use a special laser to erase his ex-wife’s name on his finger.
Hudson has already received half a dozen treatments since January, but he will likely need another two or more.
In the end, Hudson will have spent almost eight or nine times as much removing the tattoo as it cost him to get it etched on.
The time commitment is also lopsided: It took 15 minutes to get the tat, but it is taking the better part of a year to get rid of it.
Six to eight treatments are often required to remove tattoos that contain black ink. Tattoos with multiple colors can take 10 to 15 treatments.
More than a dozen people contacted for this article said they wanted to have a tattoo removed, but they could not afford the procedure.
The majority of respondents said their unwanted tattoos are names of ex-partners or are located in visible places that embarrassed them when out in public or in the work force.
Some companies refuse to hire people with visible tattoos, and human resources consultants warn against displaying them on job interviews and in the workplace.
A Dayton man said he was worried the three tattoos on his forearms would hurt his chances of getting into a police academy. A local college instructor said the tattoos he got in the military are not “so cool” in the academic setting.
When young people grow up, they often grow out of their former enjoyments.
Dawn Verburg said the tattoos she got when she was a teenager — a butterfly beneath the belly button and sun and moon on her lower back — are sources of embarrassment, now that she is a 33-year-old mother of two young children.
“They were what was pretty to me at the time — I went through a catalog and picked them out,” Verburg said.
For a while, Verburg said the butterfly was cute and fun to display. But she was less pleased with the sun and moon design, because it was larger than she expected and painful to get.
Real regret, however, dawned soon after she became pregnant at 23.
The ink embarrassed her when visiting the doctor’s office for tests, and thinking as a mother, she did not want to set a poor example for her kids.
“I do not want my kids growing up thinking that since I have them, it’s OK they have them too,” Verburg said.
Verburg plans on having them removed, but she said it would have been far easier if she never got them to begin with. She said if she acted less impulsively, she would have no butterfly, planet or star to worry about her children or others seeing.
Palmer said only a tiny fraction of his dermatologist practice is devoted to tattoo removal. He only treats a few patients each day.
He said tattoo removal procedures would be more popular if the cost was not prohibitive.
“I think a lot of people would have it off if it was inexpensive,” Palmer said. “We charge $75 an inch, so a small tattoo may cost $75 per treatment, but a large tattoo could cost $500 per treatment.”
There are inks that are easier to remove with lasers, but they cost more to get. Most people do not want to spend more on their tattoos and assume they will love their body art forever.
In his job, Palmer encounters tons of people whose love of their tattoos have faded, like many of the tattoos themselves.
He urges people to really do some soul searching before getting a tattoo.
“You get a tattoo because you are trying to tell (others) something — you get a tattoo on your arm because you were in the service, or you get a tattoo in honor of somebody or you did it on a fluke,” Palmer said. “It ends up causing you to talk about it. ... Some people do not want to talk about it anymore. They just want it gone.”

A new procedure however may make tattoo removal a lot faster, less painful, and much more affordable for those who have tattoo regret in the future. The company is called Quanta, and their laser tattoo removal machine removes the tattoo and covers the scar tissue at the same time, thereby cutting the number of treatments necessary for an average size tattoo by almost one-third of the time compared to the old way.

The permanent tattoo on David Hudson’s ring finger only provided him with temporary pleasure.
Last fall, about four or five years after he paid a Dayton tattoo artist $80 dollars to etch the name of his bride-to-be into the area above his knuckle, Hudson began to view the tattoo more as an unsightly ink stain than an expression of his love. His feelings about the tattoo changed after he and his wife divorced.
“I got it as kind of an engagement ring, but things didn’t work out,” said the 48-year-old Kettering resident. “But I got it for the right reasons.”
Except in rare cases, tattoos are supposed to be permanent.
Part of their appeal is their perceived irreversibility, said Dr. Gary Palmer, a dermatologist in Centerville who performs tattoo-removal surgery.
But feelings about body art often change over time. The designs and words that originally mean so much to people when they get the tattoos later on become unwanted reminders of a former partner, time in their life or state of mind they would like to forget, Palmer said.
“A lot of times, people want them off because they’ve changed,” Palmer said.
About 36 percent of Americans between ages 18 to 25, and 40 percent of people 26 to 40, have tattoos, according to a Pew Research Center survey.
It is estimated that about 45 million to 50 million people in the United States have tattoos.
